Hi & welcome. Post some photo's of your rides up thru the 65 Chevy short box. Those that are earlier models also sound interesting. All the later rides you have are fine in your profile but too new for discussion on the HAMB. Jimmie
I sure will. I read the rules and understand that this is a 65 and earlier site, and that is no problem. My phone crashed and I lost a lot of photos, but I have old photos of them and can take some recent ones. They are all in the “planning” and “collecting parts” stage. I hope that is ok.
Ok, I had some time to get some pictures and wanted to share. Starting with the oldest: 37 Chevy utility 1 1/2 Ton. I have the cab, doors, fenders and cab running boards. Then a 38 112” w.b. Commercial 1/2 Ton. This is a nice cab and p***enger door. I’m looking for a box, hood and grille. I believe 37 and 38 fenders are the same but grilles are different. Not sure if I like 37 or 38 better. I would be interested where I could find what parts interchange on these. They are both the “short cab” they have the chopped look. I don’t have a lot of history with these, just a future project. I want to do research and keep an eye out for parts. Then there is the 57 GMC. This has some history. We found it on a ranch in Nebraska about 20 years ago. It was sitting in the area of the ranch where they park stuff they don’t use anymore. It was missing the doors, bench seat and box. The rear diff had been flipped over so it would run faster in reverse. They cut 6” of the frame at the rear and welded them on top of the frame to make an “L”. They had some other brackets welded on here and there. Our guess is they were using it for a sweep or fire truck. The ranch owner said it was there when he bought the ranch and knew nothing of the history. It looks original otherwise. It is a longbox with the 347 Pontiac and 4 speed hydra-matic. It is a 1/2 ton (100), with all the chrome and was built in the Pontiac, Michigan plant. It had 3 holes drilled in the hood when we got it. Of course you GMC guys know that was a dealer installed hood ornament. I found one on EBay and bought it (it needs re-chromed) This is the one I am most interested in getting going. We have always been excited about this project and my dad is getting older and I want him to be able to drive it before his driving career is over. I’m looking for a box, tailgate, rear bumper, heater control, heater box, bench seat and radio for it. The last one is a 65 Chevy shortbox fleetside. It was my first “car” that I’ve had for 25 years. It was an original straight 6 but has a SBC in it now. Another future project that I am keeping an eye out for some miscellaneous stuff for.
I just purchased a truck for parts for my ‘57 1/2 ton. It was advertised as a ‘57 GMC 650. I am having trouble decoding the serial number. It looks more like a ‘56. The cab is a 5 window which I never knew existed. But I am seeing other heavy truck ‘56’s with the same window configuration. I am also having trouble navigating this site to find a good place to ask if anyone has any info on this bad boy. I know the introduction page is not a good place to ask for this kind of help. Thanks in advance.
Try starting a new thread on it. @squirrel and @Old wolf are a couple good sources of info on this era truck.
I can decode all the 1/2 ton- 1 ton serial numbers, but the big trucks have different serial numbers. I will start a new thread. I know there is so much knowledge here. thanks guys.
