I have long heard of "secret" locations of VIN's that State police use in determining the idenity of a motor vechicle. Is there a list by manufacturere's names of where the VIN is stamped on the frame in numerious places? I have been told that Caddilac had once stamped the VIN on the inside of the frame backwards so that it could be read using a mirror.
I have heard of one .I had the Mo. HP give me a Ford part # one time getting a title on a motor home D3TZ ------- I did not say a thing,Got the job done & got tags
I'm not aware of any public manual that discloses those locations. Also, the vin number is broken down into segments and each part is stamped in a different area. Location varies with each manufacturer.
If there were a list available to the public it wouldn't be a list of "secret" locations now would it ?
Yes there is a manual with this information, no it is not available to the public...would defeat the purpose of being confidential VINs. Not so much for old stuff as it is for the late-model thieves/choppers, but even old stuff was new and more prone to theft once upon a time.
54 Chevy is on driver side on top of frame rail about mid way back .. You Have to take the body off to see it.. Not sure about others though.. John Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Ford "hid" a serial number on the top of the transmission bellhousing from '32 to '48. They also hid additional serial numbers on the top of the frame rail about midpoint and then over the rear axle. But it would take a REAL THIN mirror to read those.
I just read the VIN on a '54 Ford, top of the frame, cross member by the back bumper. Did it with body on and a mirror. Wrote down exactly as it looked, then held it to a mirror again to read the numbers!
