Here is the english translation Hi, I'm rebuilding my '60 Cadillac and I've already run into my first challenge: the transmission is completely burned out. I've seen tons of repair kits, but I don't know which one is the right one. Plus, the kits don't include the drums that go in the transmission case, and I'm almost certain I'll have to replace those too. Like they say, you have to be a real Cadillac fanatic to lie about one... But that's my case! I also haven't found any information on how the Jetaway works or how to repair it. I'm also considering looking for a used transmission, but how can I be sure it's reliable? Shipping to Spain is extremely expensive, so I don't want to buy something that might not even work. Another option would be to adapt a TH350, 400, or 700, which are available in Spain, but I don't know if there are conversion kits for them. Has anyone adapted something like that? Does anyone know of a working Jetaway at a reasonable price? I look forward to your help, thanks everyone!
The Jetaway trans changed styles somewhere along the 1960 line, so check which type you have (I think I remember a "315" in there somewhere,) it will be on the nameplate. From there I would get my hands on the manual for your car, the trans section is very comprehensive. As far as getting your hands on a used unit, it might pay to check in places like the U.K. or Sweden. Hundreds of Caddy's imported into these countries, good luck with your search!
Start taking it apart before you think of ordering parts. Get the factory repair manual and a parts list with part numbers (dealer service department order list for mechanics back in the day). You will be surprised at what is reusable and what is not. All my hard parts were fine but every bushing was shot. Only then will you know what to start searching for. Going to also need a few specialty tools to do the job, manual will list them. Some have a work around, some you have to have the tool. It was built by a human, so a man or woman can take it apart and put it back together with the proper tools and knowledge from the manual.
Here is link to an old thread concerning Jetaway ******s. They definitely were never performance units like their Dual Range Hydramatic predecessors. Jetaways are 4-speed as were the Dual Range but in addition to the main fluid coupling, they use a second fluid coupling in place of a front disk clutch pack. Really strange. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1956-hydramatic-jetaway.1076226/
Fatsco Transmission Parts is a good source for rebuild kits: https://www.fatsco.net/ If you decide to replace it with a more modern transmission, Speed Gems sells adapters: https://transmissionadapters.com/
Try Ebay, see if you can get the complete 1959/1960 book as there is a 1959 main book, and a 1960 Supplement. They are also available on CD (A lot cheaper for postage, as the 2 books are very heavy).
Reverse internal gear and reverse cone circled. Fatsco Transmission Parts, Northwest Transmission Parts or Auto Tran should have them. Bill
What you are pointing to is the heat tube for the choke. Usually burned through, and will ruin the choke if run a long time ****ing exhaust gas into it. I just replaced one in my 58 Olds J2 manifold.
@BJR I speak no Spanish, just did the Google translator, copy/paste. It basically says: unless you're doing a restoration, using an adapter with a newer trans might be easier. Especially when repairs or service is needed. And good luck on your project.
Thanks for all yours answer. I write in Spanish, because my english is not very good, but the forum change lenguage automatically (press the 3 little points in right upper corner),now add photo), Aboutthe car: Finally I decide repair the jetaway, I prefer originaly by cost, and I dont need more headbroken with gearbox adaptations like I make in my 56 Bel Air. About the intake manyfold canI closed that hole definively? Here in Spain the temperature it's around 10 and 40 celsius degrees.
If you don't need a choke you can plug the hole on the bottom of the manifold and on the top of the manifold where the choke tube from the carb goes into. Otherwise just get a new choke tube and knock the old one out and replace it. A choke helps with starting and cold running even at 40 or 50 degrees F.
