I bought my '53 chevy truck when I was 14, for $800. 24 years later it still has the same shitty paint that was ten years old when I got it. I still drive it regularly in the summer, like I always have.

I drove it stock for the first 11 years, through high school and college. It was a long haul to U of I from home, about 500 miles one way at 45 mph... took 12 hours.

After college in 1992 I decided it needed a bit more power and swapped in a '91 350/th350 and Pontiac Ventura rear end. Used it for a daily driver living in downtown Seattle for a year. Couple of years later did a MII front end. Drives like a race car now compared to the stock setup.

I've always joked that I would get it painted when my kids graduated from college. Looking like that will be true now that I have kids, ages 4.5 and 7 :D.

My brother still has his first car ( high school car ).
My Dad got him a 1966 GTO in 1971........he drove it until the late 70's and it has been inside for over 25 years. Complete....never messed with ....original everything.

He says he is going to have it restored.
He has been saying that for YEARS.... :(

WOW, It amazes me how many of us still have their first cars. that must be some kind of weird hamb super natural thing that pulls us together ! I'm like the only one around here that I know that still has the first car. Mine is 69 torino GT fastback with a 351. I painted it and rebuilt the motor redid the interior, and haven't really driven it much in the last 10 years but I used to all the time, now my 13 yr old son wants it, It will break my hart if he tears it up , but I think he will take care of it. He's not really into cars like my youngest son( which is a car nut and goes everywhere with me), but he really seams to like this one. anyway maybe he car have all the good times I had in it and maybe he will pass it down to his son ......wow, thats scarry, what the future brings ............ anyway what a kool post and keep em coming love to hear all the stories. one day in the summer of '85 when I was driving down this back road ........ oops can't tell that. I was the second owner of mine still talk to the guy I bought it from , mr crawley is his name, I will try to post some pics of it .

Bought my '53 when I was 11 years old for $500 (1992), had a flatty in it, my Dad kicked in a few bucks for a red paint job, looked like shit, chopped it when I was 15, blew up the flathead (4" Merc crank, 3 97's, headers) pulled that and put in a '61 348/4 speed and a '70 Mach 1 9" rear, it was always either too broken to drive or getting some new customization, now it's in my yard covered in snow, next year I'll put some more miles on it, and someday I'll redo it the right way and undo all the mistakes I made on it in the past 14 years.

My first car is the '40 Ford coupe currently gathering dust in my driveway. It was running pretty well, until a major transmission issue this summer. Gathering the green fun tickets to get the old girl back to daily driver status. On its fourth motor, fourth interior, and sixth paint job in almost 40 years. I really need to get busy so I can drive her again.

Still have the '34 pu I bought right after high school in 1962. Got it running with a flathead and drove it for a couple of years as a part time ride. Swapped in a 283 adapted to the origonal drivetrain and put a few more miles on it.
Disassembled it in '65 and it's been apart ever since. Sold it years ago and nothing was done to it for 15 years, it just sat.
About 5 years ago I bought it back and have been collecting parts for a rebuild. I'm leaning towards a flathead w/5 spd O.D. so It can be driven on the highway. Will most likely follow much the way av8's book outlines the build in his traditional hot rod book.

I still have my first legal to drive car. Bought in ealy January 1970 for $550. I was just 16. Title is still in me and dads name. This car had every motor ford made in it the first 5 or 6 years I owned it. I learned a lot with this car.I always said it isn't old enough to restore..........well I guess it is now. The first pic was taken early 70's. 440 six pack orange cuda I should have kept....sob....sob. Anyway the second pic was taken this past summer setting next to the lo1. Like many of us here if I had kept every car I owned I would have a gold mine today

Sold my first a couple of years ago, after I let it turn into a rusted out hulk melting into the ground.

My sister still has hers though. I found it for her when she was 14, when it had a little over 61K and she's been very resolute about never selling it. My storing it for her 15 or 18 years has probably incouraged that idea. About 10 or 12 years back I promised I would fix it up a little and paint it so she could start driving it again. Started on it in February, here it is December, seems to have gotten a little bit more involved.

This picture was taken a month or so back, subframe is back under with new springs and shocks, all the bushings replaced with urethane, and a little paint. My painter has it jammed and the firewall painted, I'll have the motor and trans back in the hole when I get back from vacation.

Please forgive my ineptitude at the picture thing.

I've had my 53 F-100 since 1987, I was 14 yrs old and cut grass that summer to buy it. Still have it and still wind a trophy now and then with it. I'm 32 now, and couldn't imagine life without it. I actually will give it over to my son as our project together when the time is right.

Sorry for the crappy pic, it's all I've got right now.

I drove this in high school, but it was quite a bit different then. For winter I had an '86 S-15 Jimmy that I've also still got and would like to turn into a '48 GMC work truck.

    327, 4-gear, lots of fun.

  18. I like how you "deleted" somebody you didn't like from the old photo fo the '56.

I still have my first car...well actually my second car, but the first one I owned. My first car was a body shop loaner '77 Buick LeSabre. Some dumb ass crossed the yellow line and smashed into me while I was driving my mother's brand new Bronco. It was a week before I was to take my driver's test and my mother needed my car to drive while her's was getting fixed.
So, when her's got back from the body shop, I inhereted the old car from my mother, who had bought it brand new. 1984 Mustang. I built up a decent small block for it when I was 16 and as a lot of us did with our first cars, beat the crap out of it. I parked it while in college and never really got back to playing with it much. It sits in my storage building just waiting for me to play with it. It is a real nice solid mid 80's mustang with real nice interior, just needs a larger motor and some suspension upgrades. Now, I know it the car is off topic, but not many of us have had the same car for 15+ years, especially one a family member bought brand new. I am sure I am dating myself and I am sure now you "old" guys will chime in and tell us stories of the 1932 Ford you bought new and still have.

My Grandfather bought this car for me for $500 without telling my parents when I was 16.

Hey, Does a car I laid claim to when I was 4yrs old & drove to high school & have had in my posession solely for the past 20 yrs count? My step mother bought a 55 Black T-bird with all of the bells & whistles-cash in late 55.

I didn't come into her life until 67 I was 3, She used to put me on her lap & let me "drive" while we were going places like Toluca Lake Bob's Drive In.
When I was 4, I remember breaking the horn ring, @ that point I laid claim to it as mine.
I really didn't get a chance to drive it that much when I was 16, only a few times cause we had it @ another house. I did drive it to school though a few times. my dad said it was gonna get ripped off. I now store it @ his/my other place cuz I have no room.
I drove Banger powered Vega hatch back=(Iran oil crisis 79-80), did a V8 Kamback version & finished out school with a pair of 65/68-GTO converts & a 69 Camaro S/S 350 along with the bird. I never have had any real money to do these cars as I woud like to, but they always drove & eyeballed right.
I'm still buds with my HS Auto shop teacher & he drives a 30 Cut down roadster these days.

  21. Unfortunately just about every car I've ever owned has gone by the wayside. Some were cut up,some were smashed up(still have a few scars from those)and one was even driven into the Huron River in 1968.
One car I do own now though I had worked on right after high school(I graduated in 61)in 1963.It wasn't much;just some lettering on the dashboard but it is still on there.I bought the car about 10 years ago and managed to get it running even though it had sat for 17 years.Ran like shit but I managed to drive it 30 miles to a cruise night with the 4.56's still in it and watching the oil pressure gauge behave like a vacuum gauge!
One of these days(and hopefully soon)it will once again see the light of day under it's own power.

It just wasnt the same so I sold that one to a guy down the street to buy my 31:D. So I guess it all worked out. If it wasnt for that first 56 I wouldnt own my Model A.

well im still in high school so yes, i do have my high school car. It's an 87 mustang with some bolt on stuff. (not trad. at all but its kinda fast and really loud) Although right now its off the road for the winter waiting for me to fix it after an incident involving a burnout, a streetsign, and a ditch (don't ask). So I'm stuck with an acura for the winter months. I'm really surprised by how many people still have their H.S. cars though. I probably wouldnt keep the mustang if it was mine (its my dads) after I graduate. Its cool to see the history behind all these cars though. Let's hear some good stories about these cars. I know they're out there....

I still have my '70 GTO picked up in 1981, when I was 19, for $600. Got new front fenders, new quarters, Judge spoilers, rear bumper and front/rear valances all new from GM dealer back in the 1980's when you still could get those parts from GM. Took the body off myself with help from friends- sandblasted/painted, all new suspension, the whole deal, done in the back yard over a few years. Had the 1/4's put on, installed the other panels myself- but never finished the car- raced it in black primer with 2 different engines in the 1990's. Changed it from auto to stick 4-speed, and nothing in the drivetrain is original. Now has a muncie M-20 and Chevy 12-bolt in it with 4.88's, but no engine currently. But my kid loves it so it will go to him most likely, if his interest stays.

after a while these cars become like family members, you can't give them up. besides, what would I pay for a rebodied GTO today ?

someday...we'll finish it...we almost pulled it out this year, but had other projects to do. It'll most likely be in my will someday.:D

  28. I've still got the car I intended to drive through high School. After my '63 Galaxie dropped a valve the summer i got my license, i put it into storage and bought my '59 elcamino...drove that thing everywhere I could...nothing worked on it...pretty much just a body on a chassis with a 396 chev and a 4spd....no lights, hardly any brakes, and the floors were falling out. Last I knew it ended up in Simi Valley , Cali. back in '02......if anyone knows of it please let me know...would love to have it back. (it was multi colored-faded dark blue, black primer and grey primer, 396 and a 4 spd out of a chevelle, chromed gauges and window trim...chrome/rusty steel wheels) Have a lot of plans to bring the galaxie back....just need to get off my ass and look for some good used FE ford parts.

  29. drove this everyday to senior year. it was rough but mean. Administration hated me, they even called my mother and told her i couldnt peal out or "shoot fire out of the tail pipe" and if so, they would call the police

i continuted to piss off the administration from that point on.

heres my car the first day i got it running and legal vs the other kids cars. I can still remember the smell inside the car when i was driving there.

I graduated spring of '02; bought this fall of '02. I never got to drive it to high school, but i enjoyed rumbling through the parking lot at the local junior college.
