High-tech junkyard searching

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by gears-n-grease, May 7, 2004.

  1. For some strange reason this morning I remembered a guy I bought some vw's from. At the time I bought from him I didnt have much money so I bought what I could and went about my way. This morning I remembered the guy and the fact that he had a super secret junkyard behind his house full of pre-60's cars. So I figured I would try to look him up and find out if he wants to sell anything.

This guy is a postal worker (meaning he is very skeptical of the government and doesnt want anyone to know about his private junkyard) So being aware of his desire of privacy I figure I had better call him before I go knocking on his door. But I dont know his name.

So utilizing the internet I go to the local property appraisers site that has GIS maps loaded on it and I start zoming in and out north to south in the vicinity of where I know the property is located. Once I found it I clicked the (i) button which is identify the property owner and vola! I now have his name so I can call him ahead of time.I also have the physical address and can look at roads in the area so I dont get lost.

Using the GIS maps are pretty easy and all you really have to do to figure out what the size (scaling) of cars is to scan over an area like a grocery store parking lot or shopping center. Once you have your scaling of cars down it becomes pretty easy.

Most County property appraisers have links to digital arial photos of the county. At first I found it creepy but I now use it all the time to try to buy property.

So now the hunt begins for me. I have heard of 5 or so diffrent junkyards around the area but only where they are generally located. Now I can find out exactly where they are before hand and even contact the owner if I feel like it.

That's really clever! Thanks for sharing that, I'll have to check it out. Of course, there may not be anything that high-tech in the mid-Michigan area.

We do the same thing in Houston. Use the Harris County Aprasial District maps.

Hey Cheese good mornin ! You can access topographical sattelite mapping of regions on the internet and zoom on specific areas. Is kinda creepy when you can see which car is in your driveway. These will give you bearings? that you can cross reference through your local county platt maps in order to reveal property owners.done it. good luck .nothing is secret. submit . them
