I'm trying to get this Hilborn system set up on my restoration. The original builder just had an old water gate valve for a fuel shut off. I'd like it a little better for safety. It was all in boxes when I bought it so I'm not exactly how this sets up. I've Googled the shit out of it but what I'm mostly seeing are schematics for a pump with one inlet and one outlette. Mine has an in an out and two others that I assume are the bypass ports? Am I correct? do these need valves like a High and Low Speed??? I'm lost. I need to get a shutoff valve and would like to get the correct one. Maybe even fine a good vintage one that'll work. HELP PLEASE!
VA try Mike from Alky Digger he's in Tenn. he helped me out BIG TIME with my Hilborn on my MG. I may have a old shut off valve that was used on the MG but opted on one from Mike that worked out better. I'll look for it, if I find it you can have it just pay postage. Pat
Back in my sprint car days with alcohol, I ran a -8 line to the pump inlet. It had a filter like the ones you used to see on filling station gas pumps. NAPA used to sell the filter. I also had my fuel shut-off valve in this line. We used to use some kind of military valve that was a 1/4 turn. Speedway Motors used to have them. Now they have a different but good assortment of shut-off valves. On the pump outlet, a -6 line was plumbed as the main by-pass. This had the by-pass valve and main jet. Another line was plumbed to the barrel valve, probably a -6, but I don't remember. I didn't use any other by-pass setups and the other outlet ports on the pump were plugged. Hilborn also recommended that the shut-off valve be plumbed between the pump and barrel valve. That way you didn't shut fuel up to the pump and it wasn't run dry. It never caused a problem for me to have it in the supply line, but I see their point. Hope that helps.
I’ve got pumps like yours. On the street you don’t need any high speeds at least I didn’t use any. 1 in and 1 out and a tee in the out line for the bypass. I never screwed the bypass into the pump like many do. Learned early that engine vibration on a bypass was not your friend. You can make a small tank with Holley float bowls on the end and use it for your bypass return. And fill the small tank from an electric or stock mechanical pump from your engine. It’s been done thousands of times on the street. I had my shut off attached directly to the barrel valve for ez starting. Used a Controls Cable cable not a old choke cable. A guy with a 55 Chevrolet comes to our Saturday morning gathering and been running his on the street for years. Good luck
Thanks, Not running this on the street. It's a vintage drag truck restoration. I'll be running alcohol
Kinsler fuel injections has a Great tech / catalog combined in one book full of Information , it's roughly over 250 pages, Mechanical fuel injection appears to be complicated but once you learn how it works keep notes it's fairly easy to adjust and set up
VA here is the valve, it has a filter attached to it. It is a little stiff because it has been on the shelf over 50 yrs. It takes #10 or 12 AN fittings. Is that your truck? A friend and competitor has one almost like it, it is called "Bad News" and we ran against it at Dover dragstrip in the 60's. Send me your address and I will ship this out. I would still get ahold of Mike at Alky Digger. Pat
Love it!! What’s the current state of the truck like? Love to see pics of it now. I’d be tempted to reach out to the Rex Rod guys in Texas. He’s building vintage motors all the time and plays with all the old stuff. Super nice guys so I’m sure they’d be able to help or point you in the right direction Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
On any of the mechanical pumps, the fuel shut off needs to bypass the fuel back to the tank or to the pump inlet if there is no spring loaded bypass on the pump such as a Hilborn. I've never seen an Enderle with one. If you don't, when you close the shutoff, the pump pressure will spike and shear the pump drive or wipe out the pump clearances in a heart beat.
Search Official B Altered Restoration. I have a thread on here. Can't figure how to post thread on my phone. I'm actually out here painting it now. Sent from my motorola razr (2020) using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Don’t worry about all the extra stuff like a high speed bypass. You can plumb that stuff in later. Forget everything you know about carbs. Think about tractors or hydraulic systems. The pump is fed from the bottom of the tank and the amount of fuel returning to the tank determines your amount of fuel (pill size or jets). It’s just a pressure system. I’m sure there are guys in here that can help you get it figured out. They are really easier time than carbs.
