Projects Hillbilly Model T speedster (attempt #2)

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by hillbilly4008, Dec 6, 2019.

  1. Have you heard that this year will be the last Jalopy Showdown? The showdown is the only car show I have been going to the last couple of years, that sucks.

That does suck! I've never been, I'll have to make it a point to go this year. 5.5 hours away...

This was on ePay as a Fordson tractor unit. The pics looked like they would work in my car. I grabbed it mainly for the box.

Now not knowing jack about these T buzz boxes, can someone tell me what (if anything) i can use?

All holes line up perfectly with what's left of my original fire wall. Except, either one post is missing. Or optional?

Looks like one post is missing. That missing post is for the "Battery" connection. You'll need that! It uses the same tubes/studs as the other 9. Looks like you have plenty of spares.

From memory, on the inside, this "Battery" posts has a wire soldered to the back of it which runs underneath the lower wood piece and gets soldered to the copper contact strip that runs across the bottom wood piece in the coil box. It will be the same as the "Magneto" post which is horizontally across from it.

When the box is installed in your car, the wire from the "Battery" will connect to this missing post and a larger wire (like the spark plug to coil box wires) will connect the opposite post to the magneto post which is on top of the transmission cover.

    Hopefully this all makes sense!

Are you annealing the aluminum to form the tail section? Bob

Only when i feel it needs it. Im using 3003 alloy, doesnt need to be annealed unless it work hardens.

I need to get different lower anvils for the harbor freight english wheel. It isnt letting me get the roundness i want at the very back.

I do have a planishing hammer, may be able to use that to get there. I was going to test a piece today. I've made a bunch of scraps to test on.

Getting some where. Gas welding is not yet my bag. I'm capable of hammering rivets though

Please can somebody help me identify which 1935 issue of the Modern Mechanix magazine this article appeared in? Even better, does somebody have a scan of the other pages? Thanks.

The whole article can be downloaded from the Flickr album
build your own model a racer
Only the first seven pages are from the same article. Interestingly, none of the pages list the issue they came from. It might have been published in a book of plans instead of a regular issue.
Several of ‘Little Green Austin’s’ other albums were of interest and are worth a browse.

Thanks for the link, perfect! I also followed your advice and looked at the other albums - the Arlen was particularly interesting as my current project is front wheel drive, primarily inspired by Harry Miller, but I now have some more inspiration, thanks!

While looking for the article, I came across this:
    upload_2025-5-17_18-11-28.jpeg

There are two pictures of the Borntraeger midget in the other article in the’Build your own Model A racer’ album (but nothing in the text itself). I was amused that his ad claims that anyone can build it economically, but the caption in the article says that he spent $2000 building his…
