Hi everyone. It's been about 5 years since I've been active here on the HAMB. I got out of the car culture for a bit. I just got burnt out. A few months ago the itch came back and the hunt for a new project was on. I brought this gal home today. Last tagged in 1966. I drove 2 hours to get it. After she was all loaded up the dude hands me an envelope full of papers. Inside was the registration from 1966, plus a copy of the original bill of sale. Looking at it i realized the car was bought from and spent its days two towns from mine! How it ended up two hours in the opposite direction i have no clue. I am not sure where this build will go. It WILL get a static drop and wide whites. Before i got the car i was thinking Carson top, but now that ive seen the car in person i don't think i can bring myself to cut it up... The flat head six turns. I'll get it running for now, but eventually I'd want a 50s V8. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I've had 'em in both 6 and 8 cylinders. I was always going to stick a 389 in mine and even built an engine for mine. I told myself I'd put the V/8 in my cars as soon as the original engines broke and they never did! Had an 8 cylinder 48 and a 6 banger 41. I drove em all over the U.S. If you keep the 239 six, first thing to do is change out the 3rd member for a 3.23 or a 3.08 thirdmember from a 55-56 Pontiac. It's a bolt-in.
I still haven't been all over this car yet. I keep finding cool shit Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Just imagine the memories trapped in that car. Cool old car, now it's time for you to make memories of your own !!
That's going to be cool. I'd love to see it with a Carson or even an VERY slight chop (like 1"). But that's a lot of work and it's gonna be cool no matter what.
A bit of a stretch, but the shape reminds me of Tony Cardoza's '48 Fleetline four door, one of my favorite customs. The Positive/Negative paint just knocks me out! And I love molded rear fenders on fat-fendered cars. You can see more HERE:https://www.kustomrama.com/index.php?title=Tony_Cardoza's_1948_Chevrolet
It's so sad Tracy didn't finish her '47, but what a gal! Guts and vision! RIP. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...ontiac-turning-it-into-a-full-kustom.1079841/
I bought a really solid 41 Streamliner, a couple of years ago. Since the engine was already missing, I'm thinking 302 GMC.
Facebook find actually. I traded my Volkswagen for it. That guy got this car in trade for something else. I was looking through the paper work today and saw the original owners birthdate. It was something like 7/12/89. At first it didnt make sense to me until it dawned on me that the guy was born in 1889! Some quick math works out to original owner being 59 years old in 1948 when he purchased this car. The car was last licensed in 1966. The car drove 54k miles in 18 years, which works out to 3000 miles per year!
It was indoors when i got it. But thats all i know as far as history goes. Its obviously never been wrecked. There are some minor dents. A few on the roof and one on the hood. I'm thinking this was a sunday driver
I just picked up a battery. Quick question...is this thing negative ground? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Nevermind. The answer is YES it is. I have working horns! Haha I love it! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
No compression in cylinder #1. So off pops the head. Wait a minute... there all grade 8 bolts? Then comes the bastard homemade double bolts MADE ON THE ENGINE! Took 45 minutes to get the head off. I suspected a stuck valve, but everything moves? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Rings are toast. Period. I finally get the car in the air and get under it for the first time. Very solid. The only rot i found is the driver floor pan and the spare tire well. This car has a rear heater? There is a large air tube, and a pair of heater hoses going to a box under the seat area. Also, what in gods name is going on with this oil pan??? Yes that is JB Weld...
Looking for opinions. With this motors condition being "questionable" I would really hate to go throw a set of rings in it and find more problems. There is a '65 Pontiac 326 for sale locally for $300, supposedly a runner.. Am I crazy for even considering this motor? The plan before I even got the car was to pull the inline and dump in an 8... edit: there is also an Olds 256 flathead with hydratrans for sale locally also for $300. Also listed as taken from running and driving car...
Great project. Looks like fun!! The straight 8 Pontiac engines are very good runners. Regardless which engine you choose, any of those used engines will be questionable. So, pick the engine you want and stick to it, even if it means s rebuild. Me??? I’d pick the 65 326.
Ad for the 326 "1965 Pontiac 326 Engine, came out of a 65 Lemans with 82K miles. Heads reconditioned last year by UAP, new High Torque camshaft & lifters (about 500 miles) New Comp Cam roller rockers, new water pump and chrome valve covers. Comes with what's in the picture (no intake or exhaust manifolds) Engine ran great, no smoking." UAP is a very reputable local engine shop. Whom just happens to be my next door neighbor. If he really did the heads then im 100 confident they were done right. There was another local ad with a guy selling an aftermarket intake for a pontiac. Not sure if it would work for the 326 Edit: i found the intake. It is a torker 1 intake that will fit the 326. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Here is what i found in cylinder #1. Rings rusted solid to the piston. Cylinder wall is in really good shape, but has a ridge on top. Bearings and crank look good as well. Oil looked like it was put in yesterday. There is alot of grit inside the block though... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
So i went down to my neighbors shop today. He had the rings right there on the shelf... what are the odds... Time to clean em all get em all put back together
In other news we got to talking about other engine options and i told him about the 326 mill. He goes on to tell me that its not enough motor for this car. Then i say what i'd really like to find is a GMC 302. "Come take a walk with me" he says. Go out to the warehouse and walk up on a totally rebuilt 302 inline six. Yes, i said totally rebuilt ready to run. Make me an offer he says. I told him i didnt want to insult him. Honestly i do not know what reasonable price would be, and i've seen these go for big bucks as runners not totally rebuilt engines. ...
