Now be gentle you lot. I have a genuine question and that is, was there a scene or style of rod that represented the late 60s flowerpower/hendrix/combi era? I know the 50s style continued on through the 60s....but was there a specific "look" for that era?.......Never seen anything myself...but then again over here we tend to be a bit sheltered at times:cool: .............Bert

Damn Tingler, Quit holdin' back and tell us how you really feel. lol

Does this mean I have to quit refering to myself as an old hippie for you to respect me?

Actually to answer the question, the Van scene WAS the big thing for sure. Mobile drug and *** dens. Ahhhhhh...the good 'ol days.

I got nothing against drug use or long hair. ;) :D

I have long hair right now.....

I was just saying that in general the hippy culture didn't appreciate the same things that the "HAMB culture" appreciates.

Correct you are, and you are right as far as the "real" hippies. Almost all the kids running around with long hair etc. (myself included) were posers, to use a current term. I was always way too material to be a true hippie. Had a hell of a lot of fun though, wish I remembered most of it. lol.

Really just yankin' yer chain a bit, still love ya.

Still into *** and drugs, but of course now the drug of choice is ******...

    YEAH!....Damnit.

Anyway, if you want to see some HIPPY influenced rods, look at anything the Himsl's were doing in the later 60's and 70's. Another place to see the INFLUENCE, was at the strip, lots of ribbon, freak dots and endless line stuff going on there. It was really FAR OUT man.

"True hippies were a bunch of dirty lazy drug users"

    Hey Tingler -

That's not true! We weren't all dirty and lazy. -LOL

It was vans and v-dubs for sure though. It was a real BAAAAD era for hot rods. Good things were happening at the drag strip though - the heydays for front-engined dragsters.

I don't like to get involved in the off-topic stuff here, but I will say this. "Hippy bashing" has somehow started getting real popular in the media these days - maybe its the Bush influence or whatever (and I'm a born-again conservative - not a left-wing Democrat), but there was MUCH more going on than just random hell-raising and disobedience for its own sake.

Its impossible to describe if you weren't there. I would just caution you not to let yourself be too heavily influenced by what you see on TV these days. Some very worthwhile **** was going down then - and lots of "hippies" put their young ***es on the line for freedoms you enjoy now. It wasn't about drugs or bathing regularly when the National Guard was killing students at Kent State University - or when mounted police were busting hippie heads at the presidential convention in Chicago.

Never considered myself a dirty lazy drug user.Did my duty in Nam,then came home and did partake in a little free love and some of the mary jane. That was just part of the times. When I came to, I grew up got a job, married and raised two kids. Now I'm reliving my youth with hot rods, and some Tingler art.Oh and by the way I thought the VW beetle bug was also included with the hippie van.I'm sure there was a lot of reefer smoked in bugs while grooving to Ina Goda da Vida.Dave

You guys aren't a bunch of dirty lazy hippys.

You don't have to explain anything to me.

I know you all are a bunch of dirty lazy gearheads. :D

You all can come to TN and join me in my lifestyle....I'm a dirty lazy hillbilly gearhead. (with long hair). :D

Since I seem to have stirred the bee's nest up, I'll go ahead and ask it:

What the hell is up with patchouli? Damn that **** stinks. I'd rather smell hippy B.O. than that stuff.

muscle cars woulda been big as well. lots of them and mustangs... there's a 67 chevelle here in town that the owner calls "the survivor" and i think that's the case for a couple of reasons. first, it's apparent that he is a viet nam vet, and from the looks of the car, he very well could have "built" it (i know it would have been too new to truly 'build,' just using it for lack of a better word) when he returned. kinda rough and definitely aged, it's a full panel jobbed car with, oh, whataya call it, the spider webbing (?) all through the panels... not lace, fade or literally spiderweb, but it resembles that ****ty looking marble style that alot of cars were running a few years ago, only a good bit better, and i have seen it on alot of late 60s g***ers and dragsters. probably the closest thing to a hot rod as we know it in the period would have been some of the "street freaks" i guess.

Rods and Customs became superficial. After all there were bigger things affecting people like a war that was polarizing the country, corporate behavior that was taking advantage of the average working person. Hmmm, sounds familiar.

Choppers were going strong during that era. Some die hard gear heads kept their g***er type rides on the road. Many preferred cars that didn't take alot of concentration to drive. :)

Go karts, muscle cars, vans, and dune buggies had largely killed of traditional rods.
The roadsters and such we regard as traditional rods were there, but they were already seen as traditional and retro--LA Roadster club, etc.--and were FAR from the mainstream.
Show rods evolved first into nearly-traditional cars like the Ala-Kart and Emperor, basically 1950's hotrods with new noses and tails, and then on into the ridiculous theme cars like the Outhouse and such, which did carry strong rodding features like chromed beam axles under all the glitz.
The closest things to new traditional street roadsters were T-buckets, quite popular for a while, though not nearly as popular as the vans and buggys. Starter kits were ridiculously cheap, and lots more were probably purchased than were ever finished...
Bad graphics were mandatory for everything, as were mag wheels with horribly wrong backspacing and tire sizes...
