This is great!! I'm going to watch it again. This is the only custom car I have ever liked. I'm more of a hot rod guy. Thanks so much...……...
Truly an amazing video about an amazing iconic custom car, that was a pioneer for its time. If at the end of this video, if you don't have a tear in your eye, then its quite possible that you missed the magic of the story ! But you do have the ability to watch it again! Thanks for posting this.
great video on one of the top customs ever built. I really loved Jim's passion for the car and its history and he was someone I admired as I have always related to that as I have always been obsessed with Taboo as Jim was with the Merc.
2007 post re Bob Hirohata https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/what-happened-to-bob-hirohata.163493/
The story, from George Barris is that he was murdered while changing the oil on a car in his parents driveway in 1981, shot execution style May 14, 1981. The murder was never solved
I did not know Jim had passed away. I was wondering how the restoration was financed since he seemed like a regular guy and that would have taken big money. wish I was the guy that bought it on a used car lot when I was 16.
Watching that video made my night, thanks for posting it. I’ve long admired the Hirohata Merc but learning the history behind it makes me appreciate it even more. Much respect for Jim McNiel, Pat Ganahl and everyone else involved in restoring the Merc, and for keeping it 100% true to the original build. Thanks for preserving such an iconic Custom...
I`ve seen Walker`s clone at least 40 different times. But it was a treat to see the original at The Petersen`s Museum.
Thanks for sharing the video, what a cool story. I remember in the 1980’s some guy kept placing ads in Hot Rod magazine, trying to find this car.
Really enjoyed that, as well as the episode on their channel about the Gypsy Rose as well as the McGee roadster. Hope they keep posting more of this sort of content, very enjoyable. There's a definite need for quality hotrod and custom media such as this! It got a friend and I talking, someone needs to get Piero of Mad Fabricators fame and Pat Ganahl together for some collaborations!
