Thanks for the info. Easy to get hooked on this stuff when you're a youngster, but it's incurable once you are.

Daytona was not the high dollar track you see today back then - Most of the pits were dirt!

    Smokey Yunick's banned Chevelle

I'm sure everyone has a favorite Smokey fable!
Mine is the story of how besides putting on a belly pan and filling all the seams Smokey shrank this car to about 7/8's size to make it more wind resistant and competitive.
NASCAR looked at the car and felt it wasn't right. Not having Chevelle templets they went out into the parking lot and measured a Chevelle that was parked there.
Thinking of everything the Chevelle that they measured was a shrunken one that Smokey had built and surreptitiously left in the parking lot. After all the measurements were done Smokey's Chevelle passed tech!:)

John , I think Andy Hampton had a 1960 Rex White car also. I do not remember a 61. Did it race a the Fairgrounds or just ARCA?

Lawman, it was Buddy Ward who had Rex White's 61 car, I believe. I didn't know Andy's 60 was a former Clements car.

Here's a different shot from the 1959 Daytona 500, taken when Lee Petty and Johnny Beauchamp were battling for the lead in the latter stages of the race.

Larry Moore could get it done on the pavement, too. Here he is coming off turn 4 at Milwaukee...

I could be wrong but I remember the 60 chev was painted blue and gold and the talk in the stands was "Boy Andy has gone high dollar with a Rex White car" Btw that red 61 of Buddys seemed to never have ran very good at the Fairgrounds as I can remember very few races it won there.Do you have a any pictures of that red 61? Thanks again for the pictures i look forward every day to them LOL.

    I'm officially warped.

I see the Rex White pictures, and the vehicle I want is the car hauler.

How sick is that? Still - pulling into the pits with a modern late model on the back of that thing...

Here's some of my favorite old racing pics. All these are from the Tn. & Ga. area. My dad started out with Tootle Estes in the early '60's.

Hey, great to hear that. Tootle Estes' son, Rocky, is a friend of ours and shows up occasionally at Corbin Speedway to watch. Even flags a race or two at times.

Found this photo of Bub King of Corbin, Ky. somewhere. Apparently taken on the beach at Daytona. Friends have told me he's still around, living in Florida, I think. I've been trying to get hold of someone in the family. I think it would be neat to do a story on his short NASCAR career for the Corbin area papers...

Somebody asked for a photo of Neil Bonnett's Mustang. This is the only Bonnett photo I have. Looks like the standard Howe nose on it. Photo was taken at Nashville, I believe...

I havn't yet figured out how to post full size pics, so I'll just post attachments for now. I took these of the Greased Lightning/Wendell Scott car that has been at the Ducktail Run in Indiana the last few years.
