K9Racer, I can't remember the site title, but if you Google Chicagoland racing, you'll probably find it. Stan Kalwasinski, an outstanding racing writer up there, has a site with photos from Blue Island and other tracks.

Sam McQuagg has passed away after a battle with cancer. He was the first driver to win a NASCAR race with a spoiler mounted on the car, at Daytona in July of 1966. He also helped "launch" Cale Yarborough's career. In the photo below, Cale is seen starting over the wall after tangling with Sam in a battle for the lead in the 1965 Southern 500. Cale was driving for Banjo Matthews, and Sam for Betty Lilly. In 1966, I was sitting on the pit wall in February at Daytona and Cale was sitting beside me. In the conversation, he mentioned that he led every race he was in the year before. I said I didn't think he led a lap of the Southern 500 before he went out of the ballpark, and he said, "I didn't lead a lap, but go look at that picture. I was ahead of Sam when I went out."
in the second shot, i think thats jimmy means from here in huntsville al .mr transmission car. the guy with the impact wrench is sandy jones.the other names i have forgotten. i think the guy with the jack in the bottom shot is jeff hammond.
^ unless that jack is alunimum, that must be pure adrenalin moving that jack, I have one like it, and those things are heavy!
The 83 looks like one of Talmadge Kelleys cars from Montgomery driven by Roy Boddie or Jake Hatcher. The Studebaker had many drivers Jack Smith , Harold Fryar and Bill Latham all drove it at one time . We have a lot of photos in our fotki albums at www.aarpinc.org
i don't want to sound like a dip but...what year are those last two shots with the Transmission INdustries car and the one with Hammond running with the iron jack? is that mid 70's monte carlo or something ? i love that thing

I think they were still using a steel jack then, they sure had to swing them around. Notice it still has wheels on the front instead of a slid like they use now. Calhoun, thanks for posting the Birmingham info. I didn't realize that Harold and Freddy Fryer were that old, but I guess they were. We used to race against them. I enjoyed kidding around with Harold. They had another brother or nephew (Mike I think) that drove some in the mid to late sixties if I remember right. That Massey #98, I wonder if that was Ed Massey the father of dirt tracker Stan Massey? Gober was a local to us, him being out of Dawsonville. Where are you located? that body style m.c ran from 73-77,so somewhere in that time frame. have any of you guys ever seen the film of jr johnson swinging the jack around the front of his cars during a pit stop. better hope you was outta the way!!!
I'm in Nashville but a lot of the guys from here used to run Huntsville, Birmingham, Chattanooga, and Atlanta back in the 50's. Here's Charlie Griffin and Harold at Daytona.

Speaking of a young Freddy, here is a photo taken in late 1956. They were passing the helmets at the Nashville Legion Bowl to collect money for the family of Frank Reed. Frank was killed at the mile track at the Fairgrounds in September of 1956. So that would make Freddy 20 when this photo was taken. Not sure who is on the left, then it's Coo Coo Marlin, Freddy, don't know who is behind Freddy, Jimmie Sawyer in the dark shirt, another unidentified driver, and Bob Reuther.
Bobby, I remember now. I don't know where I got Mike. I remember when Harold got killed. A drive shaft came out of another car and came into his car and killed him. Freddy made a good name for himself in the Alpro series both in latemodels and the short lived truck series. Here is another of my stuff. This is from Dixie Speedway in Atlanta, I think the driver is Sonny Baswell. Got to go for the night. Catch you all later.
The red and gold #9 '55 Chevy on the outside of Jody Ridley is my dad, Bob Gill. This shot is at North Ga. Speedway in Chatsworth, Ga. I'd love to see some more shots of that car if anybody has them. They had a twin to that car too, but the colors were flipped and it was #6. The sister car was driven by Stanley Shadden. Later, Kevin Ooltewah Speed Shop
I just lucked into this site, but wow what memories this one brings back, Dad built engines for Lamarr for most of his Fairgrounds,IRP,Winchester,Salem ect.. days. Man he was really a great guy, always had time for everyone. And as you said, one of the better drivers.This particular car was owned by Tommy Wilson.
Not to my knowledge. I used to have an engine builder in Hartselle, Al. Holt Automotive built my dirt engines for a while. I ended up years later racing against his son a little bit. Kevin
