Here is one from the late 60's or early 70's. This is Colorado National Speedway, 1/2 mile dirt. My uncle is in the 84 car!
Looks like I found another HAMB thread I need to bookmark. Maybe I will have to head up to my folk's and find some pics of my dad's circle track cars back in the early 70's.
B.A., it was on the Crittenden Drive edge (west) of the big parking lot. Where Papa John's Cardinal Stadium is now, that used to be a baseball stadium, and the Speedway was over the left field wall on the other side of the parking lot. If you're driving north on I-65 and looking at the football stadium, the track would be past it. Spent 20 wonderful years there. Glad this thread is working out. I'll be back on it tomorrow posting a couple more. Been busy covering the U.S. Nationals from a distance for a message board.
My uncle got a 1941 willy's coupe back in i think 1977 or so. The most he ever knew about it was that it raced in wisconsin and tore down to pieces in 1965. I was wondering if somebody has any info about it, he is going to finally try to put it back together.
POST PICTURES.. the silliest little bracket, or way the wheel wells are cut, or ANYTHING is how cars like that get identified. get as many pics of the parts as you can, and Post away! J SHaw
Bill Kimmel, Frank's father, at Daytona in the late 60s. He crashed this car on the backstretch and did some sheet time.
Another of Bill Kimmel, this one at the old Fairgrounds Motor Speedway in Louisville, winning a feature in a 72 Monte Carlo. That's me with the checkered flag.
The chassis from the '67 Fairlane that Mario won the Daytona 500 with is under Darrell Waltrip's restored Mercury Montego. It is the car Darrell won his first race with. I would have rather seen it returned to Mario's Fairlane....
indybigjohn, Thanks for the pics and memories. We ran at the fairgrounds in lou. for several years. Preston Ford was my brother inlaw. Sure do miss that place.
I remember Preston very well. Thanks for the note. I've got some more photos from the Fairgrounds on some postcards. I'll be posting a few at a time.
