Just thought I would let everyone know that engine builder Ray Baker did a intro a little over a week ago and not many answered. He could add a lot to this thread. He used the screen name Ray Baker . For those that dont know he is from michigan and assembled winning engines for the who who of late model drivers. His current projects are a 54 merc woddey and a 51 ford woody.
Not too unsual a rear spring set up. The front part of the spring is real thick and usually the leaves are banded together to create an almost solid link like a three link system. The back of the spring is used for the suspension and the weight jack is a slider with the rear of the spring floating as not to bind up. It behaves like a three link system but doesn't use a Panhard bar. I would say the car has real soft rear springs with the left dearched to stop a push situation because it uses a soft front spring with a big sway bar set up like the NASCAR setups used recently. We still use this type of system but with a mono leaf or two leave spring, a traction bar to stiffen the front part of the spring to prevent wrap up and coil overs for the suspension. It eliminates the pesky Panhard bar and the upper link on the three link sustem. In reference to the soft front spring/ big bar setup that was popular with the NASCAR a couple of years ago and the lower regional NASCAR classes a lot use this system but nothing is new. Most of the things people think NASCAR teams have invented have been used before like riding on the bump stops and using the tires for the springs, this has been used before on short tracks and too shall pass. Most of us from the Kentuckyana area have run against Keith and Kervin Gardner and have a great respect for their ability. I am restoring a 1979 Pontiac NASCAR LATE MODEL SPORTSMAN car driven by many drivers to include Butch Lindley, D Waltrip and primarily Boscoe Lowe. The car was always white with red trim, number 20 and sponsored by "Ryder Flooring" (It was owned by Edgar Ryder of Virginia). The car competed in NASCAR from 1979 thru 1984 then went to Bob Schack in ARCA as a number 5 car. If anyone has any photos of this car or additional information I would appreciate hearing from you on this site. Thank you Rich.

There is also a huge collection of pictures among the members. If a picture exists, there is a good chance someone there will have it..... I have posted your question to see if anyone has any info......
The picture was taken near Siler City, North Carolina in '61 or '62. It was the first late model car that my dad drove at Rockingham. The car was owned by Pete Brewer. I live in the house seen in the background. Dennis Andrews

I think that Monte Carlo may have come from Banjo Matthew's shop. His cars were always #27. Charlie also used to do R&D ARCA testing for RCR back then
I was going back and looking at some old posts when I ran across this one. The link is like going back in time to some of the most enjoyable days I had in racing. I was the track photographer and later the race director at Georgia International Speedway (now Peach State) and also shot for Racing News. We would bring the GIS pace car up and promote our World Crown 300 at the All American 400 and I would shoot the race. We must have gotten in each others way several times because your shots follow mine closely several times. I guess we have met but just don't know it at the time. I do not have details regarding pit admittance, but as soon as I have that info, I will post it.
I attended a reunion/get-to-gather/big time bull secession in Rome Ga this past Saturday sponsored by the GA Auto Racing Hall of Fame Soc. and attended by some of the best drivers ever to twist a steering wheel in the south. I failed to take a camera, Hope someone will post a few photos.
Guys, I'm hung up with finishing the season at Corbin Speedway. As soon as things settle down, I'll get around to scanning more of Wayne Doebling's photos and posting them. Thanks to everybody for bringing in new photos and information.
Can't wait to see the Doebling pix John! I've got 5 more races in the next 4 weeks to close out the '09 Sportsdrome racing season.
I am anxiously awaiting the pictures as well. I'm hoping to build models of as many of the cars as I can.
