.........still watching, Eric. Love what you've done so far with the coupe. The plan to paint the wheels black kinda surprised me. I thought you'd paint them white after reading the conversation a few pages back with Sam Strube, er, Samiam. It'll look good either way.
    The steering shaft/U-joint is genius!

The wheel choice, and color is driven more from a desire to run the car full fendered, and have it closer to it's original look in the late 50's.......but we all know these are easy changes down the road if I want to change things up.!

Yesterday I started doing a little wire brushing on the top and bottom of the floor. It was cleaning up really nice which was good as I really preferred not to blast it.

I broke out a foam roller and brush and used satin black rust oleum with a few shots of hardener.

    Here's a few pictures

Here's another short update, the nailhead is coming together nicely.

The 322 crank forging looks great machined and polished. It ready to go in the block and is machined .010 on both the rods and mains.

You can see the high nickel content in these old blocks. It cleaned up nice with a .040 bore. The bearings and freeze plugs are in. The pistons and rods and rings are****embled and ready for final****embly. I dropped off the cam and lifters today

If any nailheads guys are reading this I need to find one extra head bolt that has a stud on it. I want to run two on the right head for a fabricated generator bracket.
    Thanks,
    Eric

A three window Deuce with a nailhead? Don't see how it can get much better than that. Just cruised through this thread and there's a great story here as well. Enjoying the updates; thanks for posting.

    Eric...
I remembered reading your brother's report on the find early on. Steve was a stickler for historical accuracy, so I devoured his articles...
If you will read his description of the 322 Buick engine, note that he called it a 'Nailvalve' Buick.
I don't know which brave progressive started with the 'Nailhead' tag, just wanted to hail Steve again for being correct, as he was known for!
...Ray Brock, HRM's Tech Editor at the time, coined the new Buick engine as the "Nail Valve Special", in 1953. That month's HRM had a trio of the engines on the cover, and a story inside...
The valves were tiny, looked like nails!

Atwater Mike, That is correct, If I called it Nailvalve no one would find it in the searches, and yes the valves are really small. The heads are being machined for 364 valves (no hardened seats as their is no room), If I recall they are 1/16 larger on both intake and exhaust. Thanks for the comments!

As a friend says "nothing but fear and gravity holding you back". From your avatar it looks like a great car, do you have a build thread going?

I think it's pretty cool that the car has some local history, and it deserves to back on the road..

Well, I did get work done last weekend. I got a bunch of small parts powder coated with cast iron look and straight high gloss black. The chassis will be detailed pretty nice so if I decide to completely finish the car it won't have to come completely apart

Here is my hi tech booth

Here are the results of the cast iron

I have all the parts painted to****emble the chassis. I will post up some pics tomorrow

Saturday I am running the 36 rear up to Randy Gribbles shop in Watertown SD. I hope I can get everything loaded in the roadster........ With the new wheel tire combo

Here are a few more pics. I had to blast the axle tubes and gather up some stuff to take to Lake City Rod and Custom tomorrow. Looks like I will be using my daily driver to haul the parts

I hung some of the parts on to make sure they fit after paint and just to keep track of the hardware

Here's a pic of the f1 15" wheels, and the 2 that are reversed. They look pretty cool

Did you find you extra head bolt you were looking for? I have a 322 in the back yard that might have another on it, if it does, consider it yours. If you don't hear from me in a day or so, shoot me a message. I have tons on my plate at the second.

I did find one, thanks for the offer. I had to order adjustable pushrods and a rear main seal from nailheadbuick.com, so I had him throw one in .

Wow, the attention to detail on this build is amazing. I like the cast finish on the parts.
