Showing my lack of knowledge here. Just looked at a couple of threads on T5s behind a flathead.
What the heck is a hogshead?

It's called a bell housing in this part of the country. It's the adapter that mates the transmission to the engine.

I alway heard the third member in a rearend refered to as a hogshead. The actual part the gears reside in.

I've not heard it when referring to a bellhousing, but I have heard folks call the third member a hogshead. I believe it's because the pinion yoke area looks like a hogs snout. If you squint. And look through dirty gl***es.

Sorry, I'm interested in the front of the drive train, not the rear. I have always called that the pumpkin.

It's actually what the the transmission cover on a Model T was called.
It looks more like one than anything else.

I never heard of a bellhousing being called a hogshead until I read it on this site. And don’t even get me started about the “dizzy”!

True there I have never heard third member called a hogshead in he past 60 years of paying attention to car stuff. The dropouts have always been called pumpkins to my knowledge. May be a locality thing to Ebspeed.
Post 8 is the correct answer.

Bomb is correct. Term from the teen n 20's. His pic show why. Although for some reason, I've usually only read about that slang term being applied to early fords. Other makes didn't seem to use it as much, from what I remember reading, most used the term bellhousing. I'm not digging thru the old lit to prove it, though... :) .

No doubt a carry over from that then. I haven't been around Model T guys enough to pick up on the lingo and as I said above a lot of terms on these may be locality terms.
I lucked out on both of my flathead projects, the 8BA came with a hogshead bolted to it with a Ford to Jeep adapter bolted to it and the granny 4 speed going behind the 254 Six in my roadster project (don't laugh it was 50 bucks with hogshead attached) came with the hogshead and the six has the bellhousing and clutch. Two seat race car looking thing that looks like it is from around 1930 with a trans that growls, sounds about right.

From what I read in your post you are saying a bellhousing and a hogshead are different. ???

Huh......I always thought a hog's head was a reference to my ex-wife's face.
