Technical HOK candy basecoat

  1. I’ve used a lot of autobahn primers.
It’s economical for student practice. That’s why I used it originally. But the epoxy lays down nice the filler primers sand and fill well. I’ve never had an issue with em.
Seems like a good product at a great price

I also like the no induction time on the epoxy primer. I reduce it 25% and use it for a sealer. It's worked great for the past 20 years.

wait a minute. the base color was black? does this mean that the "candy" is not a transparent paint? or am I missing something?

The Kandy BC is still transparent. But, the Kandy BC also has pearls/FX packs added " KBC " ( The final color will still be affected by the first base color. And also coats, fewer coats the pearl color will be more prominent. More, and the Kandy color will be more dominant. ) If the first BC was White or Grey for instance. It would not be called Planet Green. Even though it still uses the same S2-09 KBC. It is Meant to " mimic " a Kandy paint job. It is not a " completely true " Kandy paint job.

It is much easier/ forgiving to spray than a true Kandy. Over a silver flake base, with no FX packs blended in. But, there always seems to be a knee jerk reaction to its difficulty to spray. Just because of the word Kandy in its name.

The black is opaque. It makes the KBC look darker. If it was sprayed over a white. The KBC would look brighter/lighter. With the same amound of coverage. The base color still affects the shade/hue of the KBC. Because it is still " some what transparent ". The only thing affecting its transparency. Is the pearls suspended in the Kandy. The pearl is not to the point of complete saturation. You still get the some of the depth effect of looking at a Kandy. But what you are seeing is the pearls in the Kandy. Rather than flake under a kandy.

Just out of curiosity how many coats was that ?

    Edit.

Originally I asked this question. Because, it seems like the sprayed panel doesn't match the original posted color. But, HOK has a couple of " planet greens " the original posted planet green uses a bronze/gold pearl, over Grey. While the one you sprayed looks like it is one of the silver pearled versions. I'm only bringing this up. Incase you actually wanted the more olive/bronze version.

3 coats of 09 planet green. It is much brighter than the color chip. The guy i shot the test panel doesn't want this after seeing it. He's going to pick out another color. My girlfriend on the other hand loves it so I'll be painting my next car i build this color

I shot this over a black base....the hue is much lighter than I expected. I was shocked at how bright it was upon opening the can before ever spraying.

If you look at the mixing formula name. The long version. It tells you which one it is.

    Original chip color HOK0924-00

KK09-Organic green Kandy Koncentrate, FX24-Kosamene Copper Pearl, 00-grey sealer base.

The color you shot, looks more like it is HOK0904-00 or HOK0922-00 sterling silver or co**** silver FX pack. It's a brighter truer green because you don't get the darker color and color shift of the copper pearl. Through the Kandy BC. The black BC will also accentuate the silver pearl more.

KBC is really a semi transparent mid coat. It is neither a true base coat or a true candy. It requires a basecoat which will change it's appearance but that base coat does not show through the same way a base coat show will with a true candy due to the pearls mixed in. If I remember correctly from when I talked to Jon Kosmoski it is something like 8 parts binder 1 part candy and 1/2 a part of pearl.

I don't know, my friend had the color chip and he ordered this quart of paint. Since then he's decided against candy. So Iwon'tbe shooting candy basecoat now. I appreciate all this input, but originally all i asked was what guns folks had actually used successfully to shoot candy basecoat. Anthony pretty much answered the question. He was correct that I didn't need to order a highend gun. Highlander said it was no more difficult than any metallic and he was correct. My buddy who owns the car has now chosen a solid color from some late model car. So we'll buy a pint of that and spray another test panel. My adventures with candy are over for now.ATTACH=full]6733775[/ATTACH]

That is from their Glamor BC line. ( Metalic BC )

It is not their KBC line. ( Kandy BC )

He ordered, or was sent, the wrong BC & color. Or that was his only pre-mixed Planet Green color choice from that supplier. And got/was confused. Or they didn't send him, what he actually asked for.

If your customer wants the original chip color. You can either mix it in house ( probably only cost effective if its a complete car/and you don't normally stock/mix HOK ) or order KBC 0924-00 premixed.

I painted this in HOK Lime Gold candy with a Harbor Freight purple gun. White urethane primer, white pearl in clear, Lime Gold base, 3 coats catalyzed urethane clear. Came out great, not real difficult for an advance novice painter. I even did a successful invisible 2" spot repair on a fibergl*** bubble that appeared after painting!!

Thanks! That's great to know. Looks really good. Ive used those guns several times and do like them. I figured someone had shot candy with them.

Nope. Just set it at 60psi and squirted. I did set up a primer gun with an optional larger tip and nozzle they sell.
