I've a down draft intake on my banger, it's a B with a cragar OHV head. It runs great but when I come to a stop it always dies, like it is starving for gas or teh idle circut doesn't kick in. I have tried 2 carbs and they both do the same thing. is there a p***age I neeed ot bore out or something to change that will fix this? Thanks in advance for the help. Cheers! matt
is carb level? is float level OK? (should be 1 7/16"). is throttle shaft in good shape? (not sloppy loose) even a small amount of play will make getting a consistent idle speed difficult. you might try increasing idle speed to about 850 rpm for a test. if it doesn't die at this setting, i would suspect throttle shaft...just a thought...jack
If it idles down and then shuts off that sounds like a vacuum leak. Do you have a lot of blade angle to get it to idle and run ok? If so, then go looking for vacuum leak.
Obviously don't know much about your setup, so if this is completely off base, take it as an attempt to help, even if it is a stab in the dark. Holly 94s "know" if they are running frontwards or backwards. The float bowl needs to be facing the front of the car, the idle screws face the back. Running a 94 "backwards" will produce the die-at- stopping problem you are having. Running the carb backwards will also cause a very rich condition when you take your foot off the gas at speed. Please let us know how you solve thing. Good luck
Wow! can you elaborate? I have my fingers in 94's often enough and was not aware of this. I'm not trying to hijack etc, this is new to me and more info would be helpful. thanks, oj
My original 6X2 setup had the carbs mounted backwards. Would die when you stopped the car. Ran so rich small birds would fall out of the air. Didn't know what was wrong until I got on Dreddy Bears Holly 94 thread and read a bunch of links on 94s. One of the links described how someone had exactly the same symptoms as I had. He was also running the carbs backwards. He worked with "****ster", I think, to solve it. All technical aspects of what they did can be found by reading the 6X2 threads. (Sorry I can't rememberthe official name of Dreddy Bears thread or the link to the backwards carbs.) Anyway, It was determined that if the carb was backwards, fuel would spill forward, and flood the engine. Some later 94s had "high nozzles" and would run OK backwards. I have never seen a high nozzle 94. Hopefully someone who still has a functional memory will see this and direct us to the threads that details the problem and the solution. Please understand that I do not consider myself a 94 expert. All I know is that I accepted the info on the backwards carbs as logical, applied it to my situation and it solved my problem. I am a student of the 94, not a teacher.
Yep, I have an old Burns downdraft intake on it and the carb faces the proper direction. The throttle shafts are kinda worn and also on the other on I was running. I think I'll see about fixing that. I think there are over size throttle shafts and you just ream the holes? I have machine tools and could make and install bushings but that seems like a lot of work. I have a bunch of other bugs to work out but this one is really annoying.... Thanks, matt Will get back when i do the throttle shaft.
Stock throttle shafts are .277, oversize replacements are .282. I bought a .283 reamer for about $ 19. Some of my bases were worn so much the .282 shafts were loose. You can buy the shafts for about $16 and the plates for about the same. Speedway Motors and Vintage Speed sell them, plus others. If you ream and bush your base, post how you did it and how it worked out. You can buy a complete new base for about $90. You may solve your problem with a teardown, thorough cleaning and new gaskets. One easy thing to check regarding an idle problem is to insure the br*** idle tubes in the nozzles are not plugged. Remove the idle tubes and run the wire from a garbage bag tie through the tubes Plugged tubes can affect idle.
Update time. I have bigger troubles. Ken Miller sold the motor to me and heprobably shouldn't be building motors. #4 Piston oil ring tensioner was overlapped causing no tension to be on the oil rings effectively turning #4 cylinder into a oil pump. The cylinder is scored and that is bad. The pistions are chevy 283 with a .070 overbore. It did clean up aside from one score witha ***ty hone. I think it will be sorta ok. The original cragar/miller head got sent to Rich from RAm racing heads ( who I trust with all my head stuff and is totally awesome!) for lash caps, crack repairs, valve seals adn new valve springs. it should be back in a week. I have a Dan Price valve chest cove which was a porus casting, it pissed oil. Toaday I called Dan, GREAT GUY! Heis sending me a new one with no questions or aggravations at all. I will note I didn't buy it from him and just own it adn he just said , yes they do that , let me send you a new one cast elsewhere. F-ing GREAt GUY! I was really upset about this adn I think it's all going to work out. KEn Miller in TN, stay away!!!!! Dan Price = Great Guy, Perforamnce Automotive in Greenville TN+ Great folks! Cheers! Hope to get back to the 94 in 2 weeks My thanks to all who responded, all welcome to stop in for a beer ! Matt
Thanks for the update. Much is learned from feedback on solved problems. Sorry about your motor problems. On the down side, we are getting close to cruising season. On the up side, all you are going to invest is a combination of time, money and thought. No to make light of your situation, but we have been reading a lot lately about the p***ing of legends and health problems by many. Grumpy Jenkins, Norm Grabowski, Linda Vaughn etc. I know this is off topic, but I fall into that age group. It is sobering to see what is happening to our legends. I am thankful every morning I get up. Hope no one is offended by the OT comments.
Thanks Spitbucket for the reference. Even though this issue is still open I've included this in the Holly thread. Lazlo, vac*** was a thought in my head too, but you mentioned both carbs having worn shafts. Have the carbs been rebuilt properly? If so where were the kits from? Some kits from parts stores out there are suspect as far as correct PV, plunger, etc..
Thanks to all, as always, Spitbucket, No worries about your ot comments, I think that it is always appropriate to keep in mid the p***gae of time and of the legends of our intrestes. I'm 45 this year, learning about getting old, with badknees, back pains and that I just can't do all the stuff I used to even thought I always think I can. I see people I know falling to cancer, heart attacks and thing i can't comprehend happenning to me. I could understan a crash or other mis fortune but health? No way! It's happening I hate to say. I think about what I eat and try to do right there. I am proud to sat thta I invented and developed the Double S****ple bacon cheese buger. alas a great invention I no longer partake of....sad. It was a great eat. Anyway, Sorry to go OT. I have not gotten to carby repairs yet, but will do***ent what I do. I sent the head out to Rich from Ram Racing HEads in Oxford Pa. he did a compe***ion valve job, replaced the weak springs, re- fitted the valve guides & machined them vfor PC seals. He forgot to return my rocker shaft and arms so i am stuck for now. I am expecting great things. will update when I get there. Cheers! Matt
