My carb seems to hesitate when I punch it. I have a Mallery electronic distributor set at about 20 degrees, everything else is stock on this 53 Merc motor. Where do I start with this, thanks
Start with the accelerator pump in the carb. It should give a good squirt and the spring on the pump shaft should lengthen the time it squirts. There is also an adjustment for pump stroke located on the fast idle cam. It has 3 little holes in it, where the rod to the choke fits. Center hole is normal and holes to either side are for summer and winter settings. I don't understand why you would set the timing at 20 degrees. Normal initial timing is 4 degrees before top dead center on a stock engine. I tried upping the timing on my '52/'53 Mercury engine a few degrees to see what it would do. It didn't like that at all. I also tried a Mallory distributor and it didn't like that, either. My experience showed that a stock distributor with points gap at .017" and 4 degrees initial timing works like a charm. Point gap makes a big difference. Good low end power and about mid range in the power curve it's very strong at full throttle. One or all of these things could cause your problem. Your results may be different.
Hesitates when? Is it when you punch it from a standing start or when driving and go into the p***ing lane?
