Hey guys, I just finished wiring up a customers 33 Ford and Ive come across an issue he wants me to fix. The issue is that when the compressor is engaged the motor wants to or will stall. Its a 302 with a holley 4 bbl and a pretty healthy cam that lopes already and the extra load kills it. Ive been searching around for an idle up solenoid or something similar that I can wire in with the compressor clutch so that it can bump the idle when the AC comes on. As of yet I havent really found anything that fits the bill. The car idles fine otherwise and this is the last little detail before I send the car back home. The guy wants a nice car he can cruise in and not have to worry about stuff like this. I dont blame him and although I could probably think of other ways to fix this, it probably isnt the right way.
You're on the right trail with your thoughts of a solenoid that extends when the AC is on, but I don't know which one to suggest. Suggest that since you're using a Holley that you look around the salvage yards at cars that have AC and a Holley carb. Dave
To follow up what DOM was saying... Many years ago I had a 1976 F150. It had a 390 with AC and I believe a factory Holley 4 barrel. That might be a good candidate to get something off... Jay
holley sold solenoids just for this purpose.....it's a shame my holley catalog is hiding from me right now. anyways, it's called a "fast idle solenoid", see what you can find
I googled holley perf. catalog... typed "idle solenoid" in the search box... # 46-74 solenoid...use bracket # 20-9 for 4150/4161 and bracket # 20-47 for 4165/4175.. Dave
