I have read through this. Don't over carb the combination, you have, or it will be a horrible street driver. Frustrating, etc. Sometimes you just have anti-up for the combination that will work, and work well. Its all about $$ or how well you want it to run. I feel your pain referring to todays prices. That is why I am currently semi-retired from drag racing.

This is a "No-Win" situation trying to use the free parts that you have. (Without alot of custom fabrication) Your friend would be better off to just bite the bullet and use an Edelbrock C-26 intake with AFB's, IMO. He'd have the looks and the performance desired, without all the headache's. P.S. Use a looser converter if the cam is THAT wild! I know none of this **** is cheap anymore, but that's the price we pay to play...

I highly doubt you can put 2 Holleys sideways on a C26 like I posted earlier or on the air gap 2x4 intake, the carb pads are just to close together. I know I set those 450's sideways on that Offenhauser intake and the throttle shafts were on top of each other.
Maybe trade the Holleys for a pair of AFB style and search out a low profile 2x4 intake, I can measure the height of that C26 with the Carters if you want.
