They can, if the patent wasn't renewed anyone can make them. Look at furniture from Herman Miller, they let ownership lapse on literally hundreds of brilliant designs so that now there's a million legal knockoffs out there, the legit repros have the Herman Miller label and they are better made but the girly you're trying to impress doesn't know that. Having said that, the tooling is far more expensive to make a wheel than it is a chair.

Do you know what $180 was back then? Probably the equivalent of the price of a plasma TV today.

Nads. Correct me if I am wrong on this. Isn't a CNC machine entirely different from a tooling machine process? I know the one thing that ya need is someone to know or that knows how to program the system that you are applying...true? I know that one offs cost a pretty penny but, if m*** produced, you are able to buy raw material at bulk rate and you are able to put a somewhat affordable price on the finished product if it is in demand and you are able to be ahead as in man hours, cost of materials = demand of product. KNUX!

Yeah, but if you were going to CNC 'em, billet would be the right material to use...

So. Know one would buy them then if they were Billet? Even if they looked just like the ones shown here, the originals? KNUX!

There isn't enough demand regardless of you would want to make them, Cragars are available in many sizes because people still want 'em. Hollywood Stingrays were rare then and they're rarer still now, I kinda like that.

Well, that ****s!! I was hoping someone with mega bucks was going to jump on this and start making them. I thought wrong! You are right. Best if they are left the way it is, makes them rare, the way it should be. KNUX!

  8. Man, I love these wheels . They are perfect on that Pontiac! I remember seeing a very, very few sets back in the 60s when I was a kid. Funny though, I remember them being called Apache wheels , not Hollywoods......
So if these are Hollywoods, does anybody know what Apache wheels truly look like? Just curious----not trying to drail the thread:eek:

With all the detail on those wheels you NEED to cast them and do finish machining on the face of the spokes and rim. If machined all over, a set would likely cost more than I have invested in my whole car due to the time and operations involved. That's a lot of milling on those fins!

me too. i have about 10 of them around in various conditions. always looking for more in GOOD shape, i have plenty of junk!

FWIW of the wheels i have there are at least 3 different variations, two different versions that have a smooth center that protrudes from the wheel, and another style that has a cap that bolts on with 5 bolts like an american mag. these wheels look best in the larger sizes, i have a few 15s, i've heard they made 16s too.

Exactly....the last set of Hollywoods that I saw where dead on Radir wheels.

And the wheels on that 62 Pontiac where also made by Appliance Wheel Co.....those particular wheels where known as "Apache" wheels. I have an old model kit from 1970 with those wheels and an magazine adverti*****t from the late 60's or early 70's with that exact wheel. I will try to look for that magazine, but I have 1000's of old car magazines, and God only knows which one it is in.

I saw a set of those "Stingrays" at the Gateway International swap meet this past Sunday. Me and my buddy did not know what they were. They were sold when we found them. These did not have that bullet center, they had a flat cap like in the first ad, but were definitely the same wheel. Reminded me of those 2wd s-10 wheels a few years back just with the ribs added.

Those look close, but I think his are the Stingrays, not the Apaches. I would rock either one if I could find a set.
