Glad to hear you made it home OK. I was a little sad seeing it go, but glad that it went where it's going to be appreciated. It spent way too much time locked behind a fence at my place.
It was nice meeting you at Bonneville, don't be a stranger!

......Leon........not that my opinion means anything to anyone other than myself, but if I had MY way, you would be right near the top of the "H.A.M.B.er Top 10 List" for 2005!!!
I haven't seen this piece "in person" yet, but it sure looks to be neat. I've talked with Larry and he's STOKED!! I'm sure that with the way things are going right now, you could have whored this thing out on eGay and made a boatload of money. Instead, you sold it to another "car guy" at a reasonable price.
For what it's worth, you have my respect! Larry has plans to treat it right.............thanks for allowing it to come back East........

Now that it's back east, It gives me another reason to plan a trip back there sometime. Rather than doing the Ebay thing, I thought I'd "keep it in the family".

Larry, that's cool, I think I have the mag too. That will be a cool addition to the museum. Tell Paxton to get the snowmobile crap out so you have room. Does it get a small block and primer?

  5. Great find, great story.

So glad to see someone wanting it for personal enjoyment and willing to share it with others rather than wanting it just to profit from it.

The wheels shouldn't be too hard to find, I'll look around my area, lots of racers turned rodders around here.

  6. So....are we going to have wheelstanding exhibitions at the next Jalopy Showdown?

Thanks for all the interest and email on the truck. It will be fun tracking down information on it. I'm not too sure about a wheel stand exhibition though! I do hope we can get it in the museum for the Showdown. They have been shifting a lot of cars around in the museum, with a few long time cars going back to the Smithsonian.
Skate Fink, I was telling Clark on the way out that the car would not be for sale at ANY price. The Ed Roth connection just hooks me hard! I was worried to even say anything to too many people before I had it . Worried that someone would chase Leon down with stupid big money on the way there. But Leon is a stand-up guy and followed through with everthing he said he would do. Cool deal all around.

okay, does anyone know what happened to lyle waggoner's firebird?:D

  10. I remember seeing that at Knott's Berry Farm when I was a kid!

    This is soooo damn cool!

I think the coolest would be to show it as is... and then build a chassis for it so you can drive the thing around!

I don't think I'd wheel stand it... or even race it... but man, to see that motor around, would be killer!

    Sam.

Sam, thats kinda the way I'm thinking. Clearcoat the paint as-is so it doesn't go away when touched. Display it at Latimore for a while, then when space/time/$$ permits make a driver out of it and hang the present frame/wheels in the rafters. If nothing else to make it easier to move around. I'd have to do cheater slicks and chrome steelies though. I cant hang with the giant tires! No hurry though, I GOTTA have the roadster finished for the Showdown in the spring.

...............hey, we can put JT under the hood with a bong, blowing smoke and going "Vroom, vroom," Larry "driving" and me sitting in the back, by the back door to get the wheels up and it WILL be one hell of a wheelstanding exhibition!!...........:D

  13. I don't know about chrome steelies though... kinda too ratrodderific...

What about some Cragar S/S Mags? Or better yet, some polished Center Lines?

As you are well aware, the car isn't a "traditional hot rod"... so traditional hot rod styling cues from the 50's or 60's won't fly!

I think 15 x 4" Cragars up front with a 165/75-15 and maybe an 8" rim in the rear with a proper tire would rock.

TCI chassis, 4" magnum dropped axle, split wishbone, rear ladder bars and coil overs... SBC with an automatic... and you're DONE!

    Sam.

Looks like the car about fell off the trailer....

I agree with Sam on this one. its a 70's style ride, put cragears on it. but I suggest a set of 15x4 and a set of 15x10 in the rear

now you need to find a strawberry costume to wear when driving it. Maybe borrow one of the fruit of the loop costumes.......LOL

Larry just put it in the basement, you got plenty of room in your musuem..

I just saw the correct wheels for that in the back room of my local speed shop. They would be centerlines, like the back, you just need to redo the polish on the rears.

Check your PM's for the guys number. I'm sure I just looked at the wheels to match the magazine cover.

the centerlines are riveted (auto drags), the cragars bolt together (super tricks).

............sorry 'bro. I just figured that you were the only one that would fit under there and that was light enough for my fat ass to be able to counter balance upward. As far as the "bong" thing, me either, although, for me, there was a time............ We'll just have to replace you with a sound system and a bar-b-que grille..........

I had the car for years, took it to Detroit, sat at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing for a while, and a few other shows. It sat in the container out back so I sold it to a guy in CA a few years back and he is making it a wheelstander ! He has a FB page covering the build.
