Just got my son's 283 fired back up after 18 months of sitting. We rebuilt the engine, broke it in and then his mother passed away. So we've finally started working on it again. We got an ignition problem solved but during that start up the harmonic balancer flew off.

The block is a 63 with a 58 crank (if I remember correctly, it's been a couple of years now) but the crank is not threaded, and we had to rubber hammer the harmonic on.

    So, here's what I'm planning:
    1. Mic the crank
    2. Mic the harmonic
    3. Have the harmonic sleeved to the crank
Does this sound like a reasonable course of action? I'm also thinking of lookingat aftermarket harmonics, but not really sure if they'd be any better for this app.

BTW, the HB went straight down, not into the new radiator, new tranny lines, new brake lines, new etc..... Shoooo.....:D

    Thanks

Clean it with starting either,Use green loc tite wack it on ,problem solved. You could tap the crank for a bolt that also works.

Tap for a crank bolt, then lock-tite especially for a youngster. The old ones sometimes had a problem falling off with high rrrr's. Had a buddy with a really pretty 67 Vette that at about 6k everything flew apart and not only destroyed the rotating assembly, but took big chunks out of the glass.

  4. all those old press fit balancers really should be bolted on, i say drill and tap the crank. most of the 283/327 i've come across already have had it done.

  5. Had one come off 3 times in 1 day. Put in a 327 the next day.

if you could get it on with a rubber mallet, then it's too loose! should take a bfh

If the crank mics undersize at all, I'd be really tempted to replace the crank....but you might could make it work ok with a bolt.
