Home made baffles ...what do you think?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by -, Nov 18, 2004.

  1. Made some baffles for the 999 car today. I took washers and welded them to a piece of 1/4" rod staggering them side to side. They seem to quiet it down a good bit but could use just a little more. I think I should have used a couple more washers and staggered them up and down too. They fit into the tube side to side tight but top and bottom there was space. To cut down the fab time I just plug welded them in. So much for quietting it down more. Oh well it's not obnoxious anymore.

    What do you guys think?

Dang, that's economical and I bet it will be effective. What did they do volume wise? What kind of % reduction do you think you knocked it down?

I put some baffles in my header collector,
and found I got more power early,
but liked them opened up on the highway.

Clark, thats a cool way of making them. Never thought of that.

When i made the one's for the stacks on my truck, i took a pipe that fit into the stacks, and marked 'V's on it facing downward with a sharpie, then cut the two line's facing downward (toward the motor) and left the top one alone.
I then bent the point inward, breaking up the exhaust flow out of the pipe..
It quieted the truck down a lot, considering it's a bent8 with 3 foot of 3 1/2" echo can's for stacks, and nothing for mufflers exept these...

I realise your's are smaller in dia, but if you could find a pipe that just slid into your header, you could still use this method, and be able to 'pin' them on the bottom side with a screw or bolt, and remove them whenever you wanted.

I don't have any pics of mine, but if you want to see what i did, i'll pop one out and snap a pic for you.
I drove it the 7 hours to the showdown this year and really didn't have a problem with too much noise, and they dump about a foot from my head.

Hope i didn't confuse you too much. [IMG]

    Tony.

  13. Tony...bike shops sell baffles for small pipes like that. No money and no time made me do these. Plus I think these are a little quieter than they would have been.

You would need some big ass washers to do this to your stacks [IMG]

I can tottaly relate to no money and time..i think i gave my buddy 15 bux for the two section's of 2" pipe i used.

It would probably be cheeper to buy mufflers than buy washers to fit my stacks. [IMG]

Your probably right on the quietness too. those 'bangers' seem louder than 8's when uncorked.

Can you still see flames at night? My greatest thrill is getting off work at 3am,and watching the flames blazing away, then when I get to the offramp, backing off in low(PG)and watching/hearing those popping fireballs light up the night! I think it is a good deer deterent also! I love TN!!

I used to show the Harley guys a little trick on the Dyno all the time. If they are running drag pipe just stick a screwdriver or something in the end of the pipe and get an instant 5 HP. They hated it. But it allows the combustion chamber to scavenge more effectively. A little back pressure is good.

Clark great job on the baffles, but next time find your local rice rocket shop and see if they have any laying around. I know of one down here that is always taking the baffles out of pipes for people then throwing them on the scrap pile out back.

51cards that site makes it look like an old chambered exhaust, pretty cool and easy as well...

  18. Jalopy....the pipes are on the passenger side so i don't get to see them [IMG]

51Card....nice link. Looks like a cool easy way to make baffles.

Z....I tried the local Harley guys but I couldn't get 4 baffles alike. I guess I could have used different ones but I feared it would sound like a pipe organ [IMG]

This is a six year old thread, but since you brought it up... Did anyone notice that the original posters name and all other info is totally gone?? Quite odd, i have never seen that before, I must say..I'm "baffled."

I remember who posted this, but I won't say just in case he went into the Witness Protection Program or something....
