Projects Home made finned catch can

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by englishrodder, Jul 13, 2009.

  1. I needed to add a rad catch can to the coupe so was looking at options. I have one of the cylindrical stainless speedway ones but that looked too modern. Firstly I painted that black to hide it a bit, but it still looked too modern.

    So.....
There I was in an antiques emporium on Sunday and spied a finned ally Timothy Whites (Old 1950's English manufacturer) Thermos...at $8.00 Bargain.

Home it came, removed the gl*** shell from inside, modified the stopper to take a chrome T rad cap (Strangely it fitted perfectly, a quick seal of clear sealant and job done). Fitted a stainless inlet to the top.

Made the brackets to hold it to the rad, its going to be mounted "a la - Moon Tank style" with chrome springs in clear tube.

Should have it all finished for under $18. (Need to add another outlet yet in pic & give it a proper polish!)

X3 Take a couple of pictures with it mounted. I'll bet it will look right at home in the engine bay.

  22. The typical "billet" look ones can be modified to look older or disguised, I took mine to the powder coat shop for a "copper" bath and it looks better in person then in the pics, not as kool as the thread starter but an alternative................

I found a similar one today at Goodwill...$2.00 A "Thermos" brand vacuum bottle Model no.2484 Looks to be a little larger than yours but similar. This one has a red stopper on top.

    I'll post a pic soon.

oh...and why did you have to remove the gl*** shell from inside? Just curious?

That's awesome. I worked on a Hot Water Heater today on my camper and when I pulled the old on out it was wrapped in insulation and cardboard. Instinctively, I ripped that **** off and boom, right there sat a moon tank lookalike. It was way to big though.
