Homebuilt bodies

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 4t64rd, Mar 3, 2004.

1. I know that there are a bunch of people have made bodies out of bits and pieces of different bodies ie extended cab pickup from a shortened 4 dr sedan, cut down tudor sedans, abbreviated touring cars, and pieces of bodies from different manufacturers spiced together, etc.

Has anyone ever attempted something like this, Photochopped 41 Ford fenders and Tudor decklid. sorry about the spelling.

Oh man, I hope you're not going to cut up a nice Tudor like that. That's one of my favorite Fords!

holy smokes, that'd be an adventure. I think I'd just do it in fiberglass.

I think the hardest part of building a body is finding the shapes that will give it the look your looking for.I too are going to build a body from other cars because old iron can`t be found in these parts.Your only limited to what you can dream up. Crown panals are hard to do if you don`t have a English wheels and a power hammer. So look for crowns in cars you have around. In you case you thinking of building body something like a T and want to use the rear fender as quarters.Cool idea.

do I think it would work. yes... do I think it would be ALOT OF work...yes ....do I think it will be pretty... no..

Funny thing is that I had everything that you say would be needed to do exactly what your wanting to do..

I just got rid of all of it.. sold some. gave some away. threw some away etc...

I have a feeling that the roof of a late ford sedan (as shown) wouldnt have enough radius to arc up the way you would want.. fenders as cowl panels?? maybe..

seriously a different idea.. I just have a bad feeling it would turn out pretty ugly

Thats how they BUILD HOT RODS in FLORIDA!!!

I think they have even USED 40 fords,
YEAH they have...

They made ZEPPLIN styled ROPADSTERS< that LOOKEd like GOLF CARTS..,,,

And in SAN DIEGO,, they usually "DEACON" it, which is the FRED FLINSTONE style.....

RIDDLE ME?

7. Why dont you just "skeleton" it up in 1/4" steel rod as a buck/form....get it tweaked into shape and then "skin" that in however small -a-peices you can handle/shapeing wise......YES ITS A SHITLOAD OF WORK!-But it would be smarter than the way you describe....sorta like a total rewire is simpler than trying to decipher and correct 20 peoples mistakes on an old harness.....Get my drift? 8. It would need to be deeper than the fenders are tall, I might as well start from scratch. I have a design for a fiberglass body and grill shell.

I have the fenders and the decklid and a bunch of compound curved pieces I cut from a 41 Tudor, if anybody is interested in trying this...

It just couldn't and wouldn't ever look right!!
You could save all the hassle, and just go to the OUTDOORS MART and by you8rself one of them COLEMAN CANOE things,,,

That would be a good start,,
BUILDING SHITBOXES with Bill DAnce, could be the next MONSTER GARAGE,,,

Watch us make the MUNSTER COACH headlights for T-mans CAR, out of COLEMAN LANTERNS...????

It looks like a KOREAN LOG RIDE at the AMUSEMENT PARK, without the AMUSEMENT!!

Oh shit I just realized that you are from FLORIDA,,,

Okay, a couple of ideas I've been tossing around:

A one seat modified with a body based on a pair of mid-to-late fifties Chevy stepside fenders turned upside-down with an 8" strip between them. Even better if you drop it inside the framerails so they're right above the character line. Use the wheel openings as doorjambs if you gotta have doors.

Even better would be a twenties/thirties style boat-tail sportster... a spruce framework covered in doped fabric just like an old biplane. Many cars were converted in this manner to lightweight sporting roadsters back inna day. Think "stagger seating" like the old Indy racers.

Manyolcars,

There's enough chassis showing that I can see the beginnings of a great channelled speedster there if you get rid of all that lumber... or, feed a beaver a speedball and chop the top on that termite delight!

13. damn germ, that was seriously the funniest shit I have ever heard you speak of about florida - but it could just be the paint fume buzz speaking

I hammered up this panel out of the last two inches of the original fender, a piece of 3/8" rod at the bottom to keep the shape, a hunk of VW type three square-back roof and a lot of hammering.

The cycle fender was laid up out of epoxy-fiberglass on the OUTSIDE of a trailer fender. that way the inside is already finished and the contour of the outside is rounder than the flat trailer fender.

Making ONE body out of glass is harder, more work, and more expensive than making one out of steel or wood because you have to make a body plug, pull a mold and then make the body. Unless you do the Roth technique with glass over a plaster "body" that's the thickness of the glass lamination thinner than what you want the finished product to be. That's actually similar to my fender now that I think about it...

Saw part of a roadster body recently made from galvanized sheet metal on a wood framework with a 20s looking cowl/dash & frame. Sheetmetal looked like part of an old cistern. Very good craftsmanship but really old & in rough shape. Was for sale on side of road, wish I had bought it, good yard ornament.

Log = dump log, shit, feces, crap, captain's log...

Bulgogi= shredded meat you get at the korean BBQ, tasty as all get out, but texture is kinda odd, and we always wonder if its really dog meat... bulgogi, bulldog-gy, arf arf yum.

no amusement amusement-park for the log ride your riding = between the heavy spices and shitloads of garlic on the bulgogi, and the kim-chii that'll burn a hole thru you, sometimes you feel you're gonna shit your intestines out for 36 hours after having Korean bbq for lunch.

Henceforth, Korean log ride. At least, that was my impression.

My apologies if that was a tad too graphic for 6:30 in the morning....

19. I think I'm just gonna look in the dumpster behind Disney World and look for a body.

Then I'll call it Mr Toads' Wild Ride. [IMG]

As funny as that sounds, I do have a friend who's got hook-ups in Disney's Imagineering department.

21. hmmm....

Jeff, a good friend of mine is in charge of coordinating parades and puppet shows at DW (he was "Bad Andy" in the Domino's commercials).

My GF has a friend at DL who is an "imagineer", her name is Sue, but we haven't heard from her in a while.

Naw, that would be just plain gay. (not that that's a bad thing...) [IMG]
