I only have 1 filter fact to share. The white "bleached" coffee filters suck. I use the brown naturals, no more Clorox coffee. But those filters you made? I keep staring at em. Fk'n kool. I'd still do 2 or 3 layers of copper wool, and you can wash and oil that stuff too, just oil the inside layers and the outside stays clean. Did I say how kool those are? I meant to...

As far as I understand it, it's not turbulence per se, it's the pulses of an engine, that a shop vac with a steady stream can't provide.

I would say K&N filters suck, but then again they're supposed to.

I would think the best test of a filter media is, oh I dunno, maybe a 4" piece. See how much it traps and how small, add to that it's resistance to flow. I run just regular paper filters, I live on a dirt road. None of my intake tubes are ever dusty inside.

Aesthetics? Not sure about my brethren here but a pink gauze filter on an old build looks confused to me. I hope a future HAMB topic won't be "What are the best coil packs for my flathead V8." Yeah yeah, fk off. I know that's extreme, just making a point. Carry on. Oh yeah, those filter bodies? Oh yeah...

I was at the dragstrip and watched my friend make a couple passes with his BBC wagon with a paper filter for air cleaner. He pulled a brand new K&N out of the box, installed it and made two passes. The car slowed down 2 tenths and 2 1/2 mph. The paper went back in, car sped back up, K&N went in the trash can! Both were same diameter and hight.

Very cool filter housings, I like them a lot. I’ve used that technique to make odd holes in sheet metal many times while I was in the Air Force.

I vote for gloss black and copper wool. Stay away from aluminum wool. Aluminum oxide is one of the hardest, most abrasive substances around.

    I agree with @ekimneirbo .
This is really all that needs to be said on the topic of air filters IMO.

RSCN1693.JPG I got a 47 flathead with 2 97s and these G and C housings. I like them but wanted a little more filtering than just the screen. I cut up a couple of fine Scotch Bright pads and they seem to be using the job pretty well. Also thinking about copper plating too.

Says the dude that can't figure out why only 1 or 2 cam lobes fail on a cam... A dude that thinks reading a magazine article makes him an expert.

O.k. Enough with the filter bull shit! I found a Wix paper filter that fits inside and that’s what I’m running. I post this thread to show what can be done with some imagination and the right donor parts. I don’t care what people think on what color they should be or what mesh should be used, I have a plan and that’s what’s going to go down.

I have all three roughed out. Waiting on two more filters so I can finish the inside and add mesh. DE51B295-A9EE-43C1-8862-99A93D3036C9.jpeg 77382A33-1394-47B1-83E9-46A0338D9D67.jpeg 149BD554-631E-4DF2-9C69-EE1C41A5AC15.jpeg

    Hey, rr;
What're you planning for the hold-down nuts? I see an acorn, but wingnuts, dog-bone, mini-tri-knockoff, T-nut, other?
I still like them... I'm thinking you just caused the price of old bypass filter containers to at least quadruple... ;( . The new highly-sought-after "gold"... :) .

I will drill and tap for set screw on the base. I built a flat plate that holds the filter on the top it is held in place with set screws. On top of the plate is an elevator bolt that holds the lid on. Now that I have one built I should get pictures of all the pieces.

I really love that "lantern" look of those. I have a thing for custom made air filter housings.
So far I played with hub caps, a vintage vacuum cleaner, that looked like a jet engine, motor cycle side lids, an art deco tea pot andwhatnot. It's a great and creative way to add an personal touch and a "cherry on top".

If you are - like me - into such quirky stuff, 1930s outboard motors also have quite some custom air cleaner potential.

  22. nickel plating is much more affordable and can be done at home, would be a cool project to try sometime.
it is less of a bright shine that chrome has though.

IIRC Model A's grill shells were nickel plated not chrome.

Thanks. Thought it wasn't chrome but never considered SS

  26. Many luxury 1920s cars used nickel instead of stainless or chrome iirc.
Chrome especially because it was still a "fringe" coating.
