I made up some headers for the car today let me know what you think
I bought the cones from speedway and had the flanges and the bends left over in the scrap pile
I think they came out alright cost me less than $100 so far
I want to add some baffles to them later on

they were pretty easy to do once I found the first angle I needed to cut on the bends I just made a jig on the chop saw and sanded down the end that connects to the cone with the nose of a belt sander and squeezed the flange end in the vise to get the oval shape for the sbf flanges

then just did the same thing for next etc. etc.
after that I traced around the outside edge of the tube where the cone needed to be opened up and drilled a pilot hole
    [IMG]
I then came in with a hole saw and a carbide bit and shaped the opening

after each tube was done I went back and welded the inside of the flanges to the tubes and trimmed them down to shape and sanded them flush with the belt sander

heres what they look like all finished

Very nice. It's hard to tell but how far from the body are they?

A neat trick I've seen on Lakes headers is to cut the outer body off a glasspack muffler, then slide it into the baffle/cone area, and secure it with some screws, etc. Voila! Instant sound control.

I did the same thing, hacked up a free set of rusty and banged up Hooker Super Comps and welded them to a $40 pair of Speedway cones. Including the silver BBQ paint I have $46 into my lakes headers!

Here's the hacking up a glass pack for baffles thing that Poncho John is talking about:

Bringing this one back up to say thanks Ralphie - This inspired me to make my own too.
My roadster had some cobbled together stainless ones taken off the old car. (And as you can see I had an intake gasket issue with the skimmed 305 heads we put on the 307:rolleyes:) They were badly made, with too many bends and boogery welds...

True to form for me, I decided to make my like complicated by getting a little silly with the cones on the new ones......

Two pieces of 43mm tubing split, tapered and bent open were used for each cone. I bent up some 38mm tubing for the primary sections, oversized the flanges by the wall thickness and heated and swedged the tubing to match the port shape.
I may complicate my life further by making some turn outs for these....:D

The 305 heads really wake it up! I'm considering doing a little more (ok, maybe a LOT more ;)) to get through 150mph next year. We were up about 10mph (to around 129) this year.
Unfortunately that'll probably include going to a full exhaust with tuned length headers....

  15. Imagine that , 129 mph on two pieces of Chevy discard crap. That's my favorite combo BTW.

I realize this is a small journal but its still awesome !

Worked continued on the engine, increasing the displacement from 283 to 307 cubic-inches. Other work included adding a special camshaft. The car was brought to the Arizona Proving Grounds were it was driven by Arkus-Duntov to 163 mph. After the testing was complete, the engine was pulled from the car and installed in Corvette #6901, another famous car, which was set a new record at Daytona with a run of 150.583 mph.

Thanks 31Vicky - that Corvette sure looks interesting!
Well I don't have to push a whole lot of air out of my way;). May do even better with closed hood sides, tonneau and maybe a belly pan...

And cheap as chips so far! I'm sure that'll change if we do bite the bullet on the 150 target!
And I need to do a LOT of research on what is going to be the best combo. I do have an MSD HEI and an Air-gap manifold ready to fit, maybe oversized valves and some gentle porting and a little bit more cam....
Was only revving between 4200-4500 in 4th gear (cheap, bouncy aftermarket rev-counter, and I was concentrating on keeping it going straight on the very loose surface!)so I'm thinking there'll be quite a bit to find......
Oh and something that gives a little more peace of mind than the VW Beetle tyres I'm running on the front:rolleyes:
