I served with the Royal Air Force between '80 and '92.Served during the Falklands Conflict and Gulf War pt 1,though never in theatre.I would like to mention these two men:
    My Grandfather
RSM Bill Harrison,Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders
Decorated for bravery, repairing comms lines under fire in 'No Mans Land',Southern France,WW1
Never met him as he died before I was born.

    My Wifes Grandfather
    Joe Dick,Royal Scotts
Lied about his age to serve his country.Joined army at age 14!
Wounded at 'The Somme'.One of 12 survivors from his entire battallion.
A real character,we'll always miss the crazy old bugger!

    Doc,
8th Tac Fighter Wing, 8th Avionics Maintanance Squadron, Ubon RTAFB, Thailand, May 1973-May 1974. We maintained the Low Light TV system on the AC-130A/E Gunships. While I was there the Gunships flew missions over Cambodia until August 1973 when Congress cut off funding for operations. Our shop also maintained the Laser Target designators on the F-4D/E's that were assigned to the 8th at Ubon. I am proud to say that I supported the pilots and crews who flew combat missions. I still follow the activities of the AC-130U Gunships as they still provide close air support to the ground troops today. Go Spectre! I still tear-up when I hear "Ghost Riders in the Sky".

The other three years I was in the USAF, I spent working on RF-4C Recee birds at Bergstrom AFB in Austin, TX.

Awesome! I am a lifetime fan of gunships. Me and 4 of my patrol buddies would be in shallow graves in some shitty desert if it were not for the awesome might of S Gunships!
What a sight, I still remember the call....
    'We own the night'
    Fuckin too right they do!

Couldn't figure out the damn multi-quote tool. I MUST be a gunner!
ANYWHO, AZAV8, FYI: It's SPOOKY (U model), and Spectre (H Model-as well as the AC-130As back in 'Nam). Calling one, the other, is, well, blasphemy and MUST be corrected on the spot. I was out on the range with some, um, Army guys... a few weeks back, and one of them called the aircraft Spectre. That was funny. Me yelling at him from the ground, and the tone of the voice on the radio in response, correcting him. HAHA. Anyhow, no harm, no foul!!!

Anywho, I lost a few friends, came too close too many times during OEF/OIF & other operations "Other than War".

Watched a movie with Kevin Bacon, called Takin CHance. I thought a lot throughout the movie of hauling my buds in their flag draped caskets, and setting them down softly on that empty C-17. I had to leave the room a few times throughout the movie. I highly recommend it.

Doc, you need to get up to FL someday. I owe you some beer!

Duc Pho to Khe Sanh. All over Northern I Corps. I hated every minute in the Army, I hated every minute in Viet Nam and yet for some twisted reason I can't understand I'm proud of what I did. I remember every mortar, rocket and ambush those bastards threw at us every night when I go to bed. I hate the god-damned shots I have to give myself and the medicine I take for hepititus C. I hate the fucking medicine I take for the PTSD so some cocksucker doesn't have to worry about me losing my head and doing something they might regret. Memorial Day, The Fourth of July and Veterans Day are just more reason for everyone to remind the rest of us we served. Some days the only good I can find is in the friendship I have with my fellow veterans. Unless you were in the sand or in the jungle or in the air dodging the shit, you don't know shit about combat. You were a support person and though we all appreciated what you did for us you still don't know what combat is. You may have seen the aftermath, but you haven't felt the fear. So all you rear support mother fuckers who tripped on a banana peel and hurt their back and claim PTSD because you served during a period of war without seeing combat aught to stop bull shitting the VA and give it a rest!!! Memorial Day is for the dead. Veterans Day is for the Veterans of Wars. There's a difference between a war Zone and a combat Zone.

  11. Duces94, Tommy, Mike, I think you guys may be missing the point.
On Memorial Day, we all remember our mates that didn't come home, I know that a few words from someone who cares can help you through the day. I know it has helped me before.
Once again I understand the difference in Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
