ok guys, i have a add on the want adds but ive only got 1 reply. i need a drivers side hood hinge for my 53 ranchwagon.the man said he had one but he wanted 150. for it.. is that too much? i sure in the hell thought so.normally i would have just sent the money but i got so much going on with cars i GOT to save where i can.if anyone has one cheaper please, please let me know.im in need bad lol. but not 150. worth of bad.but if i cant find one ill have to bite the bullet.but man i just cant see a hinge going for 150. thanks guys.
The pivots wear out from lack of lubrication, bind and bend the arms. Also, the hood bolts are unique. The use of standard bolts instead of the special ones is the kiss of death for the hinge arms. The bent arms can be repaired but the worn pivots are pretty tough to fix. The $150 price is a pretty good deal. I've got one on eBay now for $175 and I think it's a fair price. Lots of junk for sale cheap so be sure to ask lots of questions before buying one. Good luck!
well if you guys think thats a fair price i quess ill have to bite the bullet ouch this is going to hurt.mine broke at the pivit bolt. welded it up and it lasted about a month.im going to try it one more time. then when not if it breaks ill have one to use.
Outlaw, It's actually a good price.. Ive seen em bring $200. I would strongly suggest considering getting it rebuilt if you see any signs of wear in that hinge area... that's another $150-200 if memory serves.
Outlaw,pm sent. I would never recommend buying a used hood hinge for $150 it could be thin in spots from rust and have weak springs read this link: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?do=discuss&group=&discussionid=7558 for little more than the used you will have a hinge that is beefed up and will last a lifetime.
I have posted on this before so I will be as brief as I can. The hinge design for the 1952-1954 Fords and Mercurys (they all interchange) are probably the worst hinge design ever. Not only are they counterbalanced with two sets of springs, they are also inboard thus making the wear and tear on the pivots extreme. The Mercurys sustain more wear since the hood is longer and the center of balance is further forward. Once the pivots go through wear, the arms are soon to follow and may bend out of shape. To fix them one has to split the hinge box and re-pin the pivot points (and arms straightened if necessary). Rowlands and SMS do a good rebuild. Old springs are usually up to the task if the hinges are good but more robust springs can compensate loose pivots for a while. The only way to see if the pivots are any good is to remove the springs and test for play. My advice, for what it is worth, is to buy a set of reconditioned ones because if you buy a set they will need to be rebuilt at some point far sooner than you expect. Cheers
if interested i sent the owner of that project cut up car a email asking if theyd sell parts, they ask what part. i said hood hinges, they said make an offer and there mine/yours. do you want me to make them an offer?
after what he did to it, i would offer 25.00 for the pair. he obviously has no idea the value of anything.
