Has anyone ever removed their springs on hood and used struts to hold up hood? My hood opens and closes with minimum effort but notice today hood has a small raised area on right side of hood on top where the hinge bolts underneath. Cars only been built about 6 months so really bummed out !!!
There is info on doing a 57 Ford strut on the 57 Fairlane board. http://57fordsforever.com/smf/index.php?topic=4641.0#msg34101
Our hoods are much heavier than those on modern cars. The springs are there to ***ist in opening the hood. With no springs you'll get a workout when you pop it.
I'm wondering when you say "a small raised area on right side of hood on top where the hinge bolts underneath", could that be as simple as a bolt that is a bit too long?
Yeah, I did the strut/hydraulic lifts on my hood, and it's well worth the effort. The hoods are substantially different on a '57 of course, hinged at the front, so I can't be of much detailed help. Mine have been on for 5 years now, and still function very well. McMaster Carr I believe is the best source for all the lifts and hardware you'll need. Ha, the thread Abe gave a link to is one we did in 2013!!! You'll see some build pics of my car on that thread. I just use my name on that forum...Rich Muise
