Hey guys, I'm sure it's on here somewhere but I'm having trouble with my hood. I put it on using regular bolts and it binds yo the hinges so at the moment they're not torqued down and it seems to be working ok. I just bought some shoulder bolts from c&g. I read that we need to put on some wave washers, ***uming between the hood and the hinge? The the serated washers between the bolt and the hinge? I tried to look up in the manual but all I can find is how to adjust the hood. Any help is so appreciated thanks guys!

I spent a bunch of time trying to find some serrated washers for my car. I ended up fabbing some from thick flat washers using a Dremel cutting wheel. Not pretty, but they work.

The serrated washers go between the hinge arm and the sheet metal of the hood with the serrated side towards the hood. This is what holds the adjustment once the shoulder bolts are tightened. After you have the height adjustment fixed and the bolts tight, run a length of bailing wire through the holes in the bolt heads between the two hinge arms, pull the wire as tight as you can get it, wrap the two ends together and cut off the excess wire. This will prevent the bolts from backing out as you raise and lower the hood.

Great thank you! Any pics by chance? So the wave washers between shoulder bolt and the hinge? Do I put a serated washer on all 4 bolts?
    Thanks again!

Serrated washers on all four bolts. I don't think wave washers will work. You need something that will grip the hood sheet metal.

Yes, on where the wave washers go but the serrated washers go only on the front hinge arms so you only need two of them. There is no adjustment on the rear arms but you do need to use the wave washers on the rear arms. I have heard that there is a Factory Parts Manual drawing of the hood hinge ***emblies that shows the serrated washers on all four of the hinge arms but the drawing is wrong.

I've wondered about the drilled heads on the bolts. Were they safety wired from the factory?

With all due respect to GAmes, there is no need for the serrated washers on the rear hinge arms as there is no adjustment on those arms which simply pivot on the shoulder of the bolt. Use of the serrated washers on the rears will only cause the hood to bind rather than freely pivoting on the shoulder bolts. I bought my my first 1954 Ford, the Skyliner pictured at the left, nearly 40 years ago. That car was a one owner, unmolested car with 49K original miles and the hood had never been off of the car. It still had the factory bailing wire between the hood bolts and there were serrated washers only on the front hood arms which totally makes sense. This car also still retains its original wiring harness, all of the factory rubber weatherstripping in as new condition and its original snap in sunshade. Because of its originality, I used the Skyliner as a guide in doing the frame-off restorations of my '54 Ford convertible, my '54 Mercury convertible and my '54 Ford California Highway Patrol cruiser (still in the works).

No offense intended, but that was what I quoted. The catalog does indeed show serrated washers on all four bolts and it also shows wave washers on the forward arm under the bolt head. (page 476) Without an unmolested car to copy from that was the only reference I had. Floating in space is a square piece p/n 16758, perhaps the nut plate that is inside the hood? Ecklers carries the wave washers p/n 356383-S Ecklers Washer/ For Clutch Rod I don't have any installed on mine and I'm not sure I want to chance throwing the adjustment off by installing them.

My question about the safety wire stems from my years as a helicopter mechanic where we used SS wire to secure bolts and nuts. Is the wire on yours galvanized and do you have an estimate of it's size, like .032 inch?

One more question. The picture I posted is of the rear arm Is there supposed to be nothing between the arm and the hood?

I always used just plain steel hardware store bailing wire just thick enough to go through the bolt holes. I doubt that the Ford factory went through the trouble of using stainless steel wire.

Nothing goes between the rear hood arm and the hood. Use a wave washer under the head of the bolt and the hood will simply pivot on the shoulder of the bolt.

So there are supposed to be four wave washers but only two serrated. I'll be checking my local Ace hardware to save the postage from Ecklers.
