I've not done a lot of work on the hoodlum in the last few months.Life gets in the way, thats a good thing. I went to Speedy Bills and picked up a 4 inch drop tube axel and a pair of hairpins. Found a cool old steering wheel off an old boat, has a butterfly look to it. I went to Palmyra Mo. last weekend and picked up another 235, fresh bore, new std. pistons, another cool score. Thanks to Kropduster and the boys. So, the parts pile keeps growing, last big ticket item I need is a steering gear. The hot weather is gone and my hand and arm are good to go. Rob Lee is way ahead of me in his build so I've got to get back after it. I'll post in a couple weeks.
Hey,thought I'd post a little.I've had a couple of PMs lately so it's about time for an update.Sorry about the lost photos. I found out that if you clean out photobucket you clean out the posts pictures too.I've started to restore them but find I'm missing a couple of discs. I started to fabricate some deuce appearing rails but the saw bit me and having time to sit and look I've decided to build a tube frame.the other rails are in the rafters for now but we will find use for them later. Here is a profile of what I have planned. The rear spring perch is simply illustrated also. Hopefully all will be more square than the drawings. A little more detail on the rear spring perch I'm going to carve this out of a 1x2 I put some parts up on the table next to the body and started getting some idea what goes where. I cut some tube to lay out the frame rails. The tube is tacked to the table and the mock up continues I made a template to cut the fish mouths.I did this with my buddy the 4 1/2 inch cut off wheel. If I hit it right one straight cut. Made a square table on the jig to tack the kick up in.Rear end buisness The 1x2 bridging the spring perch on the rear end is a jig to keep the alingment of the shackles true and will be removed. The hangers are stock 40s 50s chevy modified for this application. thats OK Jay welding the frame off. He has the right tools for the job. Starting to look like something.Thats OK Jay smiling So thats it for now.I cut the steering and rear attachments today and will post as it progresses.Roll cage and suspension coming next.thanks,later..................Dick.
For the rear spring perch a circle template a straight edge and nothing to do at work this time of year.I figured 1/4 inch spaces between each hole and the 1x2s walls then start from the center and work to the outside. The frame drawing isn't to scale but it has the general feel and the body dictated the math.Tried to keep it simple and look forward so you don't leave surprises i.e.the shock mount for Armstrong lever shocks on the front will be much easier to set up off the frame then after it's welded in the frame.
funny, very funny That is really shaping up. Cool that you can do frame blue prints at work, saves time in the shop.
Cleaning weld splatter on the frame.Real close to bolting the suspension on for the first time. I should of left that 32 chevy body somewhere else because I keep aquiring parts that I can't pass up.Two cars in the garage slows the one build down for sure. I'll have a photo post in a week or so on the hoodlum.Biggest problem is this has been one cold ass winter.Later................................
damn dick! this is the first time ive caught this thread! how did i miss it? looks friggin great bro! and yes, its been one bitter, long whore of a winter! man, that thing will look killer infront of the bar in may......right?????
Man Dick that is really nice!! That is a super kick ass frame you built. I'm cleaning house, let me know what you still need and I will see if have anything you need. I have some steering boxes and stuff. Let me know Dave
I split the thread on the build so here is the link to whats up now.Davey, thanks, will see you Saturday.Hope it stays dry. http://jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=250906
Without sounding like a heretic, check the hood hinge mechanism on a Saab 900 from 1980 - 1993. They have a roll-back and flip up function that is just what you are looking for. Beautiful idea. I am amazed by your metal working skill. Let's see some more pictures.
VectorGES, Welcome to the HAMB!... do a search for "hoodlum" as there is a current post on the car- this one is almost a year old.
