The one thing I had hoped to accomplish this Summer was getting the horns in my 55 Country Sedan working. When the car was first being made road-worthy after sitting in a barn for 20 plus years, I had both horns tested outside the car. They worked fine from a direct connection to a 6v. battery. (Yes, I have kept the car original 6v.) After re-***embling the horns back into the car and connecting the original wiring, they failed to sound. I purchased a new (6v.) horn relay unit from Mac's and installed it. They still failed to work. (All I seemed to get was a sickly scratching sound like an old gag hand buzzer.) I had my mechanic take a look at the problem. (At this point my wife called me "obssessive.) He diagnosed the malady as a faulty horn relay. (I have to say to Mac's credit, they did not ask me to send it back. They sent me a new one-no questions asked.) Last Saturday, I finally got around to installing the new relay. The horns sounded great 4 times, then went back to that sickly buzzing sound. WTF? Did I fry the relay? Thoughts? Help.
Both are grounded through the screws attaching them to the car itself, correct? Why would it work a few times, then not?
Byp*** the relay and test the horns. If they go beep-beep, you've fried the relay. Is it possible you've wired the relay wrong? If it's wired correctly you need to ask Mac's for yet another one...a good one this time. Or, go to another supplier who sells USA-made relays.
I replaced the wires exactly as they were on the original. Is it possible for two relays in a row to be bad? I can't keep asking Mac's for freebies.
Is your horn ****on getting a good ground? Is the horn ****on making good contact with the power wire?
At the horn relay disconnect the wire that goes to your horn ****on. Connect a grounded jumper cable to the to the disconnected terminal on your horn relay. If the horn works you horn ****on or wiring is bad. If that is the case, use an ohm meter to check that the horn ****on wire shows close to zero ohms when you press the horn ****on. If it does not check the wiring for continuity and check the horn ****on to see that it closes when you press the horn ****on and also check that the ground connection for the horn ****on is connected to a good ground.
