I have a 1940 steering column in my '34 roadster, I would like to use the horn ****on in the steering wheel to operate the horn. Can anyone tell me, (picture or diagram would be better) how the horn wire p***es through and exits the column? Also, besides the spring, are there any other parts under the ****on? I have a replacement horn wire.

    Thanks

Basically just the wire out the hole in the bottom plate. Pretty simple.

Does your wire include the contact thing as shown in the diagram? Fits under the ****on with the spring.

Here are some diagrams to finish the job.

Thanks guys. Yes, wire has the contact thing. Steering box is an F1 - does that make a difference?

maybe, maybe not, depends how it was all put together? there has to be a hole in the shaft for the wire to go through

No difference as long as the wire and contact match your steering wheel. And I think the wire should still be long enough

Thanks guys. There is something blocking the shaft. I can run a probe down the shaft from the steering wheel, and up through the hole in the steering box - both directions come up against a hard obstruction. I'll pull the column and shaft next week.

You should be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. That shaft should be straight, and the hole should be clear. But, do be aware even if the shaft hole is clear it maybe hard to get the wire down and out past the endplate tube. That endplate has a six inch tube soldered to it going up inside the shaft to keep the lube from leaking out the hole in the middle. Sometimes the horn wire will get hung up on the tip of the tube when you are fishing it down from the top.

If the "tunnel" is open could an electricians fish, or something similar, be used from the endplate to pull the horn wire down the shaft?

I'm guessing welded, it feels solid. I can weld an extension on a drill bit to reach it - but I don't know how good the weld is. When I pull it out I'll put it in the lathe and see how "true" it is, then check out the weld. The blockage appears near the end close to the steering box; if the weld is good and the shaft is straight - I'll drill it out. If not - I'll cut it and re-do it without blocking the center.

Thanks guys for all the help.

The last time I had to fish a horn wire past the endplate tube (just this spring actually), I ran a hard copper wire (household) up the shaft, taped the wiggly horn wire end to it, and pulled it through.
