was wondering what kind of horsepower i could expect to the rear wheels from the 283 i'm putting together. 1964 block, 1.74 intake valves(2brl heads),L-79 cam, 30 over flat tops, 3 rochesters with offy intake, ramshorn manifolds/2" exhaust, out to a muncie m20, and ford 9" with 373s. my best guess is enough to spin the skinny bias-plys on the back of a 2000lb. model A. thanks for playin'

    I'll play.
    Rear wheels-maybe 175/200
Considering a 220hp 283 and upgrades minus 20/25% loss to the rear

This is going to sound like a slam ( it's not ) and it is only a wild guess.
170 to 195 horse power with those small heads. You didn't imply that the motor was preped to rev to 8000. So a low reving small small block chevy not a lot of power.

It will still be a blast to drive. Fine motor for your combo.

my best guess is enough to spin the skinny bias-plys on the back of a 2000lb. model A.

Plenty enough to enjoy, but not enough to impress the guys who believe those 600 horse street small block magazine articles.
It should smoke the tires when ever you want it to.

is 20-25% loss from motor to rear wheels a good rule of thumb? the old timey fella helping me order my parts says i can expect to rev to 7500 easy. i recon i have to ask em how. is that in the crank?

  7. Valve train is a big player in max rpm

The crank will spin as fast as you want it to. Revs will be limited by the valve train. With those heads you can rev it well past the point where power falls off. Don't get all hung up on numbers. Remember that the higher you turn it the quicker it blows.

7500 isn't easy with your combination, and it will be a hazard to your engine if you try. I am thinking 6000 at the max and I wouldn't push it to that point to many times. You might get 220 to to 240 at the engine, but that should be plenty to get ya moving. The ram horns if they are the nova or truck have a small diamater outlet and will flow ok ,but if you have the large corvette style thay will help. With all this and the weight of your car spinning the tires wont be a problem.

The 373 gears should bring it alive anytime you want it to with that light of car...............

No, it's in the valve train. Making it do it more than once is in the bottom end.
WAG on rear wheel hp--somewhere around 150.

150-160 net hp at the wheels. Most early 283's were rated at 195/220 hp gross hp. Your heads are choking off high rpms. The 9" rearend is overkill and takes 3% of the available hp to turn. The 3.73:1 gears are going to work well with the 4-spd in spinning the tires thru the gears with a 2000 lb car. Have fun. Banging gears is one of my favorite pastimes.

as i went into this i was shooting for reliable horsepower. should run, look and sound better compared to the tired old 350 that was in it. i think u guys are right not being to concerned with numbers so much as the combo.
