This is going in my '32 Sedan. I'm doing some major surgery on the stock firewall right now but it will be worth it. It's '63 340HP car motor I picked up complete for $1500. It's been freshened up and is ready to go.

That sums up our whole philosophy of why we do what we do in the car world. That is why an interim engine design that's 50+ years old is popular again. I'd love to put a niner in my '32 Chevy but out here on the west coast the Barrett Jackson 'everything is gold' attitude is overwhelming. Just sayin'...

Which I why I don't want to just toss a big block in it. :)
The BJ effect is nationwide. Sure, $30k for your base model Nova with a 307 is reasonable!!

You used to be able to buy 409 truck motors cheap but these days they're harder to find.
If you can find a block, either truck or passenger you can get everything else through the aftermarket.
The most popular combo these days is to get a 4" stroker crank from***** or Eagle along with 6.135 or 6.385 Big Block Chevy rods, 10 to 1 compression, Edelbrock heads and dual quad intake. That combo will give you 474 to 481 cubes and will make between 500 and 550 hp depending on the cam. An engine like that will run fine on pump gas and make it's peak horsepower below 6,000 rpm.
Of course with porting, more compression and a lot of cam you can make even more power. Just for an example the stroked 437 ci 348 in this article made 650 hp on pump gas but it would be fairly radical for a street engine.

These engines are fine with two bolt mains for most streetable applications but if you wanted to go with a blower you might be wise to have aftermarket four bolt mains installed.

Here's a link to a video from the 348/409 Shootout at Thompson Ohio last weekend. Most of the cars are race cars but some are street cars.

Can't afford the build on one so I'm currently building an almost 409. It's a 401 Buick nailhead bored .30 over. :D

I hear ya' on the "almost 409" deal! A Buick
nailhead is practically identical to a 409 Chevy
in every possible way too....except for the
block, and heads, most of the external parts
and all of the internal parts being completely
different! I think some of the spark wires might
    interchange though!!! LOL:D

  18. i've got a 348 in my 55. my car is pretty much stock as far as fire wall and suspension. if you look at some of my posts here and at www.trifive.com you can see how i mounted it for relitivly cheap and easy. it fits awsome and looks right. i don't have time to look up and post links right now. i goby " scotty t "on the other site. also look up MONK on trifive, he did a beautifull install of a 409 in a 55, but he did it the pricey way$$

Friend of mine is a 409 nut and has them carbed, injected, and blown. Has three 62's and a 37 business coupe, all with 409's. Uses BBC cranks and gets 444ci (or about) with the 427 crank and just over 500ci with the 454 crank. He was cranking out low 10's at Ennis with a carbed one when Super Chevy asked about doing a feature. Don't know if that came about but he got a great carrying the front wheels poster sized picture from them. The chassis picture is for the 37 coupe.

So how much is a stock bore complete hi-perf version (1962 409/409) with original 2-4 set-up worth? I am considering selling mine. It includes the 63 chrome dual 4 air cleaner and chrome valvecovers.

Never did a 409 but I did a built 348 with 2 fours that I had in a display chassis for several years. Took it to lots of shows where I must have answerd the WHAT IS IT question a thousand times. Finally built it into a roller deuce 50s style highboy roadster that's getting finished at Lowrey Restorations in New Hampshire. He says the motor runs great and should haul**** in a light roadster!

My dream is of a built 409 with a roots style blower. How feasible is this?

    Very Feasible.But Spendy.
This thing hauls**** and I can attest to it.
    a very fun ride.
