I'm working on this one right now. All matching numbers (QB block) right down to casting dates on distributor, waterpump, etc.

This belongs to a friend of mine. It has a 427 crank and is bored (i forget how much),but it is now a 509 with a BDS blower setting on a very rare BDS intake. He has several 348 & 409 motors .
PS although the way he did the cowl & firewall you might think its a porta-john,but its all steel

Here's how that last 409 turned out. Pretty well stock except for Ross pistons, Z-11 cam and lots of TLC.

Lot's of discussion on cost for a now a days 409. You youngsters out there, this will make you cry. Back in 1962 when I built my B/G 1954 Chevy,(check it out in my profile album), I ordered a 409/425hp from Chevy. Complete engine, carbs (2 AFBs) to oil pan, bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, and BW T-10 4 speed, delivered to my local Chevy dealer, are you ready for this??? $1575.00!!! On the performance note, the car had to weigh in at 3681, had a 4:56 gear, and ran low 12s - high 11s.

Hopefully this isn't repeat info... just didn't take the time to read the whole thread.

    Blower kits for 409/348

    http://www.superchargerusa.com/chevy_bk_street_strip.htm#409bk

There is also a lot of info on remachining 454 cranks to fit the 409 to give it some additional cubes. Some are claiming close to 500 CuIn. I'm also aware that there are aftermarket pistons to replace the cement filled paintcans the stockers use.

Edelbrock also make alloy heads and perf valvetrains. Paint the heads the block color and claim them as iron.

If all I've done is rehash info already provided... my apologies. If not, I hope this helps

When building the Scout I was looking at doing soemthing different. A 500 in Caddy and a 409 were definitely in the discussion. Ultimately wimped out and went with a sbc

Happy to see this one come back!!
Needless to say, I still haven't done anything to pursue my 409 lust. Money keeps going to keeping my heap on the road, and I decided to build a motorcycle while I was at it, lol.

LarryT, who is the old boy in East Texas(Tenaha) with all the 409's? I should know, but can't call his name now! He just had a '70 Chevy pickup in one of the shootouts in Hot Rod Magazine. I remember going there back in the early '80's as a young kid and just drooling all over those engines! LOL

I don't know if he has a 70 pickup or not, but are you thinking about Ronnie Russell? He's pretty well known in 409 circles.

Edit--Don't guess that's who you're looking for, he lives in Ladonia.

A friend of mine has block #6 coming from the new batch of aluminum 409 blocks being built that addressed a lot of the old issues. Should see it next month. Displacement should be around 540 or so when he is done. He is putting it in a pro street 56 chevy, looking forward to helping him get his 13 year project on the road. I will post pics that don't look OT.
