Really great photos. Steve Cab. would likely really enjoy seeing the scallops on that 1930/1931 - looks like the reverse of his paint scheme on the Cab Coupe...

I cannot believe that I am looking at Australia and New Zealand here. It looks like So.Cal. Great looking cars and the weather too. My question is.....how is it driving there in the land down under? You guys have the same traffic that we do here? Ya got alot of boneheads ya have to share the streets with? It must be nice driving your rod around without any stress around like here. I get nervous just driving down the street locally. KNUX!

These are a few pics from my trip in Jan/Feb. I've been writing a little ongoing story about my trip and will post over 200 pics along with it. Check it out under the thread 'Road Trip - New Zealand, part 1 and 2 and so on..

New Zealand is a great place and full of hot rods.

Fortunately no matter where you are in this paradise of ours theirs always a nice country road not far off the beaten track to go cruisin' on. The Motorways (Freeways to you) are much the same, just a bit less traffic and again fortunately we don't have people pullin' hand guns on ya with road rage. At least not yet!

Sorry, Drewfus - no more pics of Emma's sled. She is a member here, so hopefully she will post some if she see's this.

No more pics of the 6x2 blower setup either, but here's one of Toddy's 8 pack Moon injector setup that was next to it. Extra points if you can guess who they are named after !

Here's a couple more of my sedan - had a pretty big thrash, but didn't have enough time to get the wiring finished or the seats mounted. It was good to get it out the shed anyway.

53burb - yep, we got boneheads and traffic here too! Apart from rush hour and holiday weekends it is pretty good though.

Hey is this a 53-54 Plymouth? The front fenders look like it. Or is it something Australian.

  14. It's a Desoto!
3W Larry... if that 32 has the X factor, it's 'cos it's a Tardel car!
I did a trip to LA and San Fran a couple of years ago, and I think our roads or freeways in the major cities are similarly congested at peak hours, but otherwise OK. Remember, our roads are smaller and different to the US, because we dont have much flat land. When I drove through Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi, it was as flat as the eye could see, for hour after hour! Even where it is flat here, you still see the mountains.

  15. Well, what a cool day it was:
There was Ron Hogan there - an early speed equipment pioneer that manufactured finned alloy heads for V8-60, 21 & 24 stud V8 and also Lincoln V12
The black 32 3w of Rob Forsythe is an incredible car originally built by Keith Tardel. Rob has been making his own improvements to emulate a forties dry lakes car - GREAT WORK!
The little black Model A roadster with the McCulloch blown flathead is built by Dan Tyler of Rocket Speed Equipment - www.rocketspeedequipment.com
Then there is the Art Chrisman No 25 dragster clone of Dave Alexander built here in EnZed. Visit www.nz-hotrod.com for the issue on this car.
Colin Crook's '32 five window with the gold running gear has certainly raised the bar.
SimonSez Deuce Tudor has certainly come a very long way since the initial chassis construction of Terry Bowden
There was plenty of fresh stuff to see.
Also the Deuce roadster of Chris Hornblow and Larry beck with a 348 and four speed - too much!

We don't use no stinkin' Aussie bodied cars for Kustoms here..lol, Na it's a 53 DeSoto
Emma has had a hand in almost all the work on the car, it was her concept and a couple of years ago when she got the stock moredoor she had never picked up a gas torch in her life, now she sends Ricki up stairs to look after the kids and spends the night in the shed hammer welding and cutting up steel.
I her own words from Jan 2006

"The Blowout is going to be a really great day!!! as to me it is the best show all year, My sort of cars, no billet or plastic at these shows, I just wanted to build a real custom, not buy a already 50s restored car, lower it, paint it matt black, and throw some aftermarket wheels on it and call it a custom,
while stripping her on sunday i stood back and counted the different body mods shes got from different cars and this is what shes had so far.

51 spinner back window surround and glass
60 plymouth belverdere tailights and custom surrounds
    52 chev roof insert
    55 dodge grill
55 chev headlights and eye lids,
54 ford customline bonnet cut up to make rear skirts,
also every area has been changed, the headlights, the bonnet, the front gaurds are getting extended, the doors have been played with throught the chop and had the frames all handmade again, the rear gaurds and wheel archways have been cut and manipulated, new handmade rear skirts, new tailights, moving petrol cap behind license plate, the shaved boot with all holes welded and leaded, and of course the roof, so unless your a chrylser freak you wouldnt even know that that car was a 54 desoto as the only thing left standard is the dash and the swage running along the front gaurds, any way thats enough from me."

It's now a year later and the 2007 Blowout has been and gone, Emma's car had taken huge steps forward...she has even had Gene Winfield take a hammer to the car and autograph the dash while he was visiting a couple of months ago.
You can see pics of the last two years progress here on the NZ Hot Rod Forum
    http://www.nz-hotrod.com/photopost/index.php
    Emma's user name is hotrodgirl

Couple more pics , yep that's our Emma with pinstriper Scotty Bare , Husband Ricki in the other pic with Axe in hand, (and sometimes she does allow him to work on the car) ...lol. The Plymouth is Ricki's daily/family car.

It is a Canadian DeSoto produced for export, which means it is basically a re-badged Plymouth.

Now, I'm not sure if you are refering to the intake exclusively. But as far as I can make out it's a custom intake with tubing run from a crank-driven Potvin Style blower. Also the picture bears the title of "Front Blower".

Not knowing much about Inlines, I'll rest it here.

Calling Kiwis "Australian" is like calling you guys Canadians or Mexicans........not being racist but that's not where we live. NZ is a tropical ( most places) South Pacific Island paradise , Aussie is a big barren Continent.....1200 miles across the ocean. In the 50s the motor companies made god awful home brew versions of most US cars in Australia , but imported the Canadian ones here( because we are right hand drive.)
I have to agree Emma's car is a real Kustom , more importantly every idea and concept on the car is her own vision, sure she has had heaps of help from friends , but that is what rodding is about!! I can't wait to see it finished and driving.
That reference to a 51 Spinner back window...Spinner=Kiwi slang for a shoebox ford.

sweet looking rides thanks for the pics....rooster

  23. You kidding?! I just spent 3 weeks driving on mainly Californian roads....I did some stupid shit that would start a tyraid of abuse here, but people just nodded or waved and were cool about my screw ups (mostly involving those satanically-inspired 4-way stops!). The only problem with your traffic is the damn expansion joints in the concrete freeways! They drove me insane....and they made us feel like we were doing 100mph when we were only doing 55!

Cool pics and I have to agree with Peddro mostly I had very understanding roadusers in the USA even when I'm looking down the wrong side of the road at em :)
The blower and 6 carbs is Bruce from Petrolhead mag's sure I can get hold of some more pics if you need.
Was a great show as per usual, not the easiest to run a trade stall in the weather, but it did give me a chance to take a good look around for a change and talk to some bods, and even placed a few bids on some of tha auction goodies.
Exellent show as per usual, great turnout and some very cool cars.

    Hey there,

It was a great day thanks so much for your kind comments 97.
It was great to get the sled there and i reckon she didnt look too bad in the primer Blue, she was going to be green and i was going to call her "Jaded Angel" But shes now blue as i didnt think the green would suit, so now shes called "Blue Murder".
She will remain that colour for a while till Gene Winfield comes over again, he offered to paint her for me and suggested i paint her Blue. he will do a Dark Blue Fade away paint job on her so im pretty lucky i must say.
I have learnt alot of lessons from this build it has really being a incredible learning experience, I wanted a custom more than any thing, and it had to be a chopped 50s car, but in NZ we may have plenty of hot rods but not many 50s chopped (proper) customs so that made me want to build this car even more, i wanted some thing different and when i first bought this car every one said i was crazy, They said i had just bought myself 20-30k worth of body work, so that was hard to deal with at first but i just perserved. when i first bought her for the 500 bucks she was going to be some ones garden art as she was really that gone, rusted out body mounts, sills, doors, a and b pillars, and the roof was cut off and slit through the middle, no bracing was used when the previous owner chopped her up so she kinda caved in a little, no running gear nothing!!!
When i first bought her i was so enthusiastic i thought id have her on the road in 6-12 months, he he yeah right boy did i have alot to learn, so i went through the process of trying to get her all done, I had to sell my 303 olds engine to pay for the roof chop (boy that hurt). and if it wasnt for my good hot rod friends like Ricki Wood, Steve Levine, Dave Graham, Chris Stanley, theh guys in my Hot rod club North Shore Rod and Custom and the encouragement and advice i get from few of the guys on our NZ Hotrod Forum i dont know how far the car would be now if it wasnt for every one.
I will never try to undertake such a big job as there is more new steel in my car now than original 54 desoto an dit was such hard work but i have learnt such much now. so my next project be much easier to deal with and il buy a rust free car this time (off a nice old restorer) and just chop her and change the running gear give her custom tailights and grill (already know how im going to do this, I have some very wild ideas) and headlights, i want to build a Ed Rothesque style Fender less Tudor channeled and chopped with a Hemi powerplant, and some other ideas which i will keep to myself.
Any how enough of that, again thanks for the kind comments 97 your a sweetie xx
