If I understand it Saturday there will be a "show and shine" type of event at the Drive In with the movies starting when it gets dark. If you are referring to Friday, those of us that live a bit of a distance will use Friday as a travel day knowing that when we get to the hotel parking lots in the area (if it's anything like the HAMB Drags), it will be so chalk full of hot rods that Friday nite in the hotel parking lots will be an event itself. If I only lived an hour I would certainly cruz over on Friday nite, sleep at home, then cruz back on Saturday for a full day of fun at the DriveIn.
We plan to drive in on Friday stay at the motel. Party Saturday all day and night and afterword at the motel. I dont know why we arrange an overnight stay Saturday night... We wont be sleeping. Cant wait. How cool it'll be to meet so many Hambers. I usually dont get away to make any of the other gatherings and am looking forward to it.
vance, i'd say you're looking at 2 hours +.....it's at least an hour from chilocothe......dayton is at least an hour from chilocothe....but, then again you might have that hot rod running and do it in under an hour.......the only thing.....i don't have to warn a fellow ohioian how bad the state highway patrol is here... speaking of which, all of you need to really watch coming through here....johnny law is THICK.....i can drive all the way through KY and WV and never see a radar man.....i can drive to columbus from here and see 10-15 ANY DAY.....US23 is horrible with tax collectors.. HRLC and PJ, sounds like a plan.....
Many of you will be coming down US23 from the north. Most of you will probably cut off at Chillicothe, Ohio. If you just come a little further south to my home town of Portsmouth, along the Ohio River (50 minutes south of Chillicothe), you can go to our small, 50's style, greasy s****. Here's an article that was emailed to me today about, "Hickies." "Shug," the founder's sister, which now owns it, reminds you of "Flo" on Alice. She is funny, sweet and in your face. They call you "sweetie" and it's quite a trip.... From there, you could go back north on 23 to state rt. 32 and head east.....this'll get you back on track. All in all, it's about an hour and a half outta your way......or, you could follow the scenic Ohio River all the way on 52........Hickies is on 52.... EDIT: oh yeah, and order their french fries and gravy.....yep, that's what i said! Here's the article: High Notes for 01-11-07 I was in Hickies Hamburgers restaurant, for my weekly fix of a double cheeseburger and bean soup, when Shug Hickman, the ebullient owner interrupted the hubbub to read the following: There is an internet blog, en***led, Culinary Corner, My City.com, and Chuck Charles wrote this article for the blog en***led, Burger Bound: In Search of the Best Burger. I am reprinting some of it here, because of its obvious local interest related to Hickies Hamburgers of New Boston. He wrote: I am not ashamed to say it: My favorite meal in the whole world is a big juicy burger. Nowadays, burgers are made from everything from turkey to emu; abut for the purpose of this search, I will stick to the cl***ic beef burger. Here are the places to get the best burgers according to Mr. Charles: 10.. LA Buns, West Hollywood, CA 09. Red Robin, (National chain) 08. Ritz Carlton, Kapahua, HI 07. Johnny rockets, (National chain) 06. Gear Jammer Truck Stop, Mountain Home, ID 05. Ruby Tuesdays, (National chain) 04. Fatburger (Soon to be National chain) 03. Hamburger Hamlet, (Regional chain) 02. In N Out, (Regional chain) Number 1. (One) Ahh, for the number one spot for best burger in the country is a very small burger, in a very small town, available exclusively at a very small restaurant. Hickies is located in New Boston, Ohio. Near the banks of the Ohio River, this small diner has become a staple of good food for this remote area. Hickies maintains a closely guarded recipe for their burgers, which are one size; small. I suggest ordering at least 5 of these mini delights and maybe 5 to go for the drive home. Each burger patty is hand pressed and grilled up home-style. The made-to-order burgers are then placed on a steamed dinner roll. Not that this regional delicacy requires any additional flavors, but it is served with onion, pickle and mustard. The burgers are simple and aromatic in their flavor. Hickies is always packed with customers and is overwhelmed with phone orders. If you ever wind up traveling to this small and quaint river town in southern Ohio, Hickies is a definite dining stop for a great burger, actually the Best Burger in the Country. Apparently Mr. Charles travels the country looking for culinary delights. One person named Karen responded to the article back in July 2006. I grew up on Hickies hamburgers and had to let you know that you are dead on about them being number one!! We have since moved away but when we are home to visit, its on the top of the list of required stops. Thanks for taking the time to visit and enjoy a place of great nostalgia to me. Shug, or Shoog, or however one would spell it, especially loves people whom she refers to as Hickies Virgins. That is people who have never eaten one of her burgers. So, be sure and announce that it is your first time if you ever go in. You wont get a discount, but youll be recognized if Shug is in the store.
Well, I do drive on the fast side and I do USE a CB radio. I have several years of driving a semi in this area of Ohio, so I know most of the hot spots. I think I'll be Ok. Hey Denice! I just told my wife about this gig and she seemed pretty interested in going. Looks like you may get to see her again besides Columbus. Vance
Vance you can prolly take Rte. 35 east all the way to Rte.7. This will put you about 6 miles from Galopolis.
I was watching a special on PBS/HD last night about drive-ins and they were talking about how in the sixties the drive-in owners were starving to make ends meet. Some made the switch to ****. In the little collage of ***les shown was this little gem. I help but wonder if Aaron knows about it... Hey Ryan, please DON'T put this on your list of movies to secure! Vance
man, this is cool as hell. wonder if a 65 impala will be allowed in? it's got the correct number of doors, pedals, gears and cylinders... and she's rollin on astros... hell, i'll even lower it some more for the occasion.
Just cause it hasn't been on the top for a while. I hear FlatheadYoungin is footin' the Brunch before the show starts.
You come the scenic route, stop by Hickies and it's on me.....how's that.... Can I sleep next to you in your bed. I don't snuggle long, after it's over.... hahahah Is it JUNE, yet!!!???? I haven't been able to get anything done.....got another little one on the way in March.......I'm swamped!
I wonder if there'll be any furture HAMBers conceived that nite at this Drive-In gig. Wouldn't that be something to tell your car pals later in life, "Yeah, my folks told me I was conceived the nite of the very first Hot Rod Cinematic"
Youngin" You give hickies and snuggle in bed?? I'll be down tonight, I cant wait! And no I'm not boring your child conceived at some old necking pit!
Sounds like fun. If you wanted to add a drive-in night to the HAMB Drags, theres a great one in Lamar, MO, not too far from the track.
Being it's an hour or so from Charleston,WV to Gallipolis,OH I'll be there. This sounds like it will be a huge show/run, I'm looking forward to it.
Denise, you volunteering!!! I am leaving the wife at home, so if it happens I am sure there will be attorneys involved. How about a game of room key roulette. or some HAMBstyle spin the bottle I knew this was gonna be a great show.
Just a heads up if you still need a room! I just changed some details on my reservation this week at the Holiday Inn and they said they still had rooms available. When I booked it all they had left was a king bed. I checked back this week and she said it was no problem switching to a two double bed room. I checked on line and there were more rooms available then than there were when I originally booked it.
If they take the car this would be a good investment. http://www.vehicle-tracking.com/products/7100.html Might be able to tie one of the inputs to it from a door switch.
wow! my cable modem goes down for a couple of days, i come back and man this thread has went south...... petejoe, what kind of girl......er, um, i mean guy do you thinki am.... this show could get waaaay out of hand......we east coasters are like a bunch of couped up animals waiting to get out! ryan, what kind of local security are you hiring

Hey, are we allowed in to the movie with our daily drivers?? Just in case I don't get my Buick running in time. Oh hell, my buick is a 1966 electra, would this be allowed in??
Leadsled, Get your **** moving! Just get it mechanically ready and make it pretty later. 5 months.... lots of time. Keep the 20 inch blings off of it and you'll sneak right in!
I can't believe your actually asking this. I certainly don't want to park next to someones daily driver. If I wanted to do this I would just attend a GoodGuys event. If, if, if your Buick is not completed in time come anyway, leave your daily in the hotel parking lot, bring lawn chairs, and you can ride in to the Drive-In in Big Olds. I can stick you and your wife/GF/family in teh trunk and sneek ya in.
