It took me almost four years to find a set of 16" flipper hubcaps for my coupe. I finally found a set. I had been looking for a set of 16" that fit like the standard hubcap, where it fits the full wheel. I found quite a few that were in the 14" size range that covered the middle part of the wheel, like the hollywood and national brand flippers. Also I was lucky enough to pick up a set of pristine 16" Lyons wheel covers. It seems like in the late 50's there were a lot of hot rods running hub caps and that's the period I was going for.
Old thread, guy isnt active on here anymore but this looks cool, 70s 80s cap? 70s ford truck? Seems Ive seen them before and thought of there potential, Cool comes from the strangest places sometime.....if one has the eye to recognize it
Some Lancers on one of my projects "The Sweet Heart Roadster". Chrome 15" wheels with the polished caps gives a cool look I think. I need to get back on this one!
Not many people like hubcaps any more, here are couple of mine on my 39 SD. I made both sets of mine. I like them. I think they look better with the whitewall.
Hello, When my brother purchased his first hot rod sedan, a 51 Oldsmobile 2 door post, it was pale yellow and had full stock hubcaps. It looked cool just because it was his first, old, used car. but, he had worked as a boxboy and store helper to save up for his first car. at age 15, he could no longer stand it as his best friend was already 16 and had a very cool hot rod coupe, a 34 Ford 5 window coupe with an Oldsmobile motor. So, the pale yellow Oldsmobile sedan had to be co-signed by our dad. thanks, @themoose The pale yellow sedan instantly had the hubcaps taken off and it ran with painted wheels for a while. It looked ok if it was going to the drags, but, it was primarily a daily driver to high school and to work. He knew it was a stepping stone to other hot rod builds and drag racing influences. Then one day, he gave me the job of installing the Moon Racing Discs on the wheels. They were not snap on hubcaps, but the screw in type. I took a small drill and made a pattern on the rim edges. Once installed, he was the only high school teen with Moon Discs. Over the next years, plenty of things happened to the Oldsmobile sedan. downtube exhaust outlets were installed with removable caps. Then, under the door lakes pipes connected to the downtubes, lasted two weeks, due to scraping constantly. Finally, he was satisfied with the overall look, when it got lowered. And then, a lowered rake stance was the final preferred look. That lasted several months to a year and finally, a friend needed a car and wanted to buy the Oldsmobile sedan. But, wanted to have it painted a lime green. The Moon Discs still made the lime green Oldsmobile sedan look cool with the lowered rake stance. Jnaki So, for the next car, again, the full stock hubcaps came off in the first week. And, various small hubcaps were tried, including adding beauty trim rings for the last final look in high school. With this combo, the 1958 Impala was a sleeper with 300+ horsepower looking like it rolled off of the showroom floor. Including silver painted rims underneath. Hubcaps were much less expensive than chrome reversed wheels. With this look, at first glance, it looks like chromed rims. It was the last photo from the May 1962 school newspaper... YRMV
