Hot Rods hot rod hubs

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by RottonRon, Jan 14, 2026.

  1. i have a 1936 ford rearend mounted on my speedster project. Iput 1947 backing plates on it to convert to juice brakes. i have some 39 t0 41 drums and when Iput them on they only get to the plate but not overlapping it like it supposed to. when I put on later drums they fit just right. what am I missing ? the early drums have good thickness and i would like to use them . Any ideas is this common when mismatching stuff? thanks !!

If you have everything like you said, it should bolt up fine. Only reason it doesn’t might be interference of something out of whack. Check the bearing, the keyway and key, brake shoes, bends in the backing plate or drum lip.

Show us some nice clear pictures.

^^ and fwiw, rear Hub bearings were same 1928-1936 then changed in 1937 through 1948. Could there be a mismatch between hubs and bearings such that you may have earlier bearings in your later hubs?

I think the reason for the bearing change is the OD, so if he had early bearings in his late hubs, they would wiggle around.
