Very interesting. Of course, most of us hoodlums know Mouse as the Grateful Deads' resident artist (along with Rick Griffin).

But check out what Mouse says on his own website. Never bothered to check this out until BoomBoom's post:

During that period (early 60's), Big Daddy Ed Roth, hero and self-promoting genius of the monster rod cartooning movement, dropped by Mouse’s airbrush booth at a major hotrod show. He admired Mouse’s work, then threw down the gauntlet by offering to show him how to make $300 in a few hours. Stanley invited him into his booth. Roth sat on a low, small stool, a big man with a big gut, and they airbrushed shirts side by side all afternoon. Mouse learned some valuable things that day. He learned that he was significantly faster than Roth, even though Roth was sketching only in black whereas Mouse was using rich and lavish color. He also noticed that as Big Daddy did indeed make $300, but Mouse had a cool grand in his pocket. He also realized that his own art was too good to sell so cheap. Naturally, Stanley Mouse was drawing mouse monsters with their wheels, so Big Daddy dubbed Mouse “Rat Fink.” Then he took Mouse’s catalogues back to his own studio in California, where he had his artists copy many of Mouse’s original themes and figures. Thus, the Rat Fink was born.

As usual, great stuff Ryan. Thanks for sharing, Spooky.

Based on info I have on the Winfield Truck. This picture of the Winfield Truck is from the same show that these pics were taken at. They were featured in the March 63 issue of Custom Craft. From my research and talking to Gene these pics were taken in October of 1962 in New Jersey or possibly New York.

  4. WOW I too hit up garage sales, Estate sales, thrift stores weekly in search all kinds of collectibles and stuff like this. I picked up some slides a couple of months ago and there are some nice old rides from the '60's no car shows, but a family vacation in the '60s and lots of great shots from right here in TX..

Thanks Spooky and Ryan.. You guys rock.

  5. Kodachrome - GONE WITH THE WIND...
Didn't see that anyone else mentioned this but apparently Kodachrome is no longer made. Another relic of the past. Last week or so National Public Radio had a spot on the last batch of Kodachrome before production stopped. Gave a batch to a well known photographer who snapped the last Kodachrome pics. Replaced, in part, by digital....

  6. I had the Beatnik Bandit at my show the year, 1961, before in Florida and it had a stereo presentation. The Silhouette probably had a stereo presentation with the car.
Fantastic photos and of course any time I see the El Matador I get excited.
I saw the Beatnik Bandit on my trip to Pebble Beach. It is at the National Museum in Reno.

  7. The only slides I ever find at garage sales are of some dork's honeymoon to Niagra Falls. Nice score Ryan! Those are some cool lookin pics! Thanks for sharing!

Great stuff. It should be of the 62 Show as the Blue Pontiac ragtop with the 53 Chev grill teeth is a 62. Could be late 61 but that would have only given them days or a couple of weeks to do the car.
The photo of the shoebox shows that four doors weren't always a neglected stepchild either.

    Wow,

A couple of years ago a friend sent me some pictures of those exact quarter midgets. Looks like this may be the photo that was displayed beside them at the show, too. Very cool.

That is Dennis' Olds. Winfield painted it many times. That one was a Candy Blue using the previous silver blue paint job as an underbase. You can barely see the blended underbase color on the front fender. I met Dennis set up night at the '62 Monterey Kar Kapades. That night he was spraying his all white Tijuana tuck & roll interior black using spray cans. He was also the guy who was towing the Jade Idol when it flipped off the trailer onto its roof. The picture shows the Idol with one of its early paint jobs and the deco strips on the roof. I think the Olds was towing the Idol when it wrecked but I may be wrong. It's been a while.
    These are great pictures.

The history that spills out of a box is one thing, but to read from those who were there or who know the times and place make it timeless and even more incredible.

The Jade Idol picture is breath taking. I love this car.
The shop truck of Gene's is crazy beautiful and to think it was found not 20 miles away from my house.
    Incredible.

  15. These great photo's... reminds me of the days (1962 and 63) when I entered my '60 Chevy in the Ram Rods Washington DC Armory shows and itching for days from the angle hair stuff we used around the car and engine and always some flowing around the rear tires, and those roll and pleat wheel well covers we snapped those in. Good memories...thanks for a great post :D.

  16. Stovebolt55, what's the rest of the story?! Where was that "Now" photo taken?

Thats a cool story, I've heard that he was towing the DreamTruck when it rolled. We are in the process of building a copy of Dennis' 56 Olds that my dad started about 15 years ago, sold and then got back recently after the guy he sold it to let it sit in an orchard since the day he got it. I don't want to call it a clone because it isn't exactly the same but it is definetly based on his car. We are hoping to have it ready to take to The Winfield Watson Custom Car Gathering in Mojave.

  18. Gerry, You are correct. That is Andy's matching T-Bird tow car. Whenever he changed the coupe color, he changed the T-Bird to match it. He even installed a single, offset Citroen headlight in the T-Bird grille to match the '32's "Cyclops" asymmetrical version.
The T-Bird ended up with the 406 Ford engine in it that Andy won with the coupe in '63 or '64. That same engine now resides in a friend's '63 Galaxy.

Bob, do you know what happened to the thunderbird? In the Big Book of Barris, George said that they restyled it slightly when they modified the coupe with a new grille shell and taillights

    I stand corrected.

Ok so from a reliable source. A friend who was 16 at the time and went to this show. It was Indianapolis in 1962. He doesn't remember which month it was though.

Cool story about that show. He said he went to that show specifically to see the Jade Idol. Gene Winfield showed up flat towing the Jade Idol with the Winfield Shop Truck!! Haha wha a sight that must have been. The Shop Truck flat towing the Jade Idol down the highway!!

Pretty neat. Digging the two boats. Notice the "waves" made out of colored sand or salt?

    GREAT STUFF!

  24. The Thunderbird had the Citroen headlight installed and Edsel station wagon tail-lights as I recall.
Andy sold the Thunderbird to a local guy who removed the 406 engine and all of the custom features bringing the car back to stock condition. He then showed the car to Andy and proceeded to tell him how valuable he had made the car by removing all of Andy's custom features. Andy then told him to "Get the f--k off his property and never come back".
At this same time Andy was considering selling the '32, but
the T-Bird experience convinced Andy to never sell the Ruby Rod. Andy said, "I had another smart-ass yuppie scum from Essex Fells ( very ritzy town) offer me good money for that coupe after I sold the Bird and I told him to stick it in his ass". Andy had a way with words for sure.
This was told to me by Andy in the late '70s or very early '80s when the Bird was sold.
The only good thing to come of the T-Bird's transformation into a clone of all the other T-Birds out there was a friend was able to purchase the 406 for his original 406 Galaxy.

  26. Gerry,
As you already know,Andy's car goes up to the Saratoga Auto Museum next week to be on display for the next six months.
Any HAMBERS in the area should stop by and have a look-see.

The Kassa car alone makes it worth the ride...like seeing hot rod "Royalty".
The Saratoga Springs Museum is a great place...old renovated bottling plant... sits in the middle of a state forrest...the historic downtown area is just down the road and it's lined with cool old stores and places to eat.....awesome scenic road trip for anyone who can make it.
