C,mon, don't be humble, don't tell me there ain't a big giant ego thing about what we do.
Don't tell me there isn't a kick behind being stared at when you drive your pride and joy down the street.
Don't tell me that that burnout you did coming outta the gas station was something you did for yourself.
Don't tell me you think it's strange when 'civilians' don't bat an eylid at your ride.

"What? It's not like you see a ride like this everyday."

Speaking for myself, I can tell you that I feel ten inches taller and 50 times tougher when I'm behind the wheel of my car or riding my chopper.
I'm not gonna be humble about it, I feel stuck up, I feel superior.
On those occ***ions that I do have to drive the Honda I feel like a nobody.
Call me shallow if you want, but these stupid inanimate metal object define me.

Somebody on this board once said that cars shouldn't be your religion, but I have a hard time not feeling religious about it.

As I was watching that Coke commercial I posted on here, I wished that it had footage of me driving my car in it.

Yeah, I'm that shallow, and that egotistical.

I sort of agree - BUT if it were just about showing off, I would be driving something that the "civilians" actually care about, 'cause there aint alot of people that really give a **** about traditional styled customs.

A blower motor in a muscle car would be better for showing off, and would no-doubt draw more attention, but it's not my bag. I built my custom just for me. I do like it when I run across someone who likes it, but as for the general public - most don't get it.

Also, I'm the type that does burnouts out on back roads when no one is around, so I guess that's out too.

When I drive my car it makes me feel 6 feet tall!! Wait, I am 6 feet tall, nevermind. [IMG]

Actually Nads, I agree with you, it does feel good knowing your in something different. But being a freak myself, (at least that's how I feel sometimes), I oc***ionaly wish I could blend in, (height wise at least). But then I come to my senses.

Usually when I'm in my car, I wonder what it must have been like when the road was filled with nothing but "old" cars. (I bet parking spaces were bigger! Hahaha!) And then I wonder if I'm in the oldest car on the particular strech of road I'm on at the time.

If I happen to be driving the wifes Grand Prix and not the hot rod, none of my neighbors wave at me.

Those *******s. Crushes my fragile little psyche.....

HAHAHA that struck me just right.

I have to agree with the pride and feeling you get while driving your out of the ordinary ride. If you didn't get any kind of special feeling from driving it what the hell would be the point?

It feels good every time I take a ride out and someone makes a complement or a thumbs up. Since I have 3 does that mean I have 3 times the ego???

    Nads,
That's a very good point. My first car (back in 1961) was a 49 Chevy and I thought that was pretty cool to cruise in. But it wasn't the same feeling I get today driving an old car. Getting in an old car now in one respect makes me feel old cause I remember when they were new. But in another way they make me feel like a kid again. And a pretty lucky "kid" at that. And when I see a young kid's face light up when he sees my car and I think he may turn into a hot rodder .... that makes me feel REAL good.

Nads is right on...it is just a blast to go for a cruise and get the waves. I get a lot of looks from the old folks and you can see them thinking back to when the car was new.

That being said, I think my favorite part is the looks I get from the kids. Parents will pace me just so the kids can look at the cars and kids on the street are always shouting about how cool the car is.

Do the burnouts for the little ones, otherwise they won't ever learn.

**** yea.. i love the attention. when im out driving my 50 (well when it used to move on its own power) i used to hope some little kid would see it and want to have something like it when he/she grows up. i know thats about 80% of the reason i got into cars. growing up around detroit u see alot of diffent old cars growing up. and it made a hell of a impact on me. i often wonder what people say to them selves when they see me driving it..."man thats a bad *** car with a bad *** dude driving it" [IMG] [IMG]
so hell yea i get a ego stroke. **** just yesterday when i took the ole lady for a ride in the chevelle i just finished up a little kid down the street gave the thumbs up and i got as gettie as a school girl [IMG]
and thats why i drove 10 min out of my way today just to go do a burn out for my buddys at there shop [IMG] i dig it they dig it. hell yea we all kick ***!! [IMG] [IMG]

it does make me feel better, no doubt, and my 65 has been enormous for "street cred" as a subs***ute teacher ("mr. L, your car is so loud!" i do love that). that being said i did build it just for me and am kinda surprised when people get so excited and militantly don't give a ****. my windows need help rolling up and down, my inner door latch on the p***enger side doesn't work too easily, etc. i deal with it, doesn't bother me. doesn't create a problem for me. it's my car and i had in my designs a car that more than likely ONLY myself would ride in. in terms of enjoyment when driving around people, i get some, but i find that my drives are so much more fun when there are fewer people out there. **** the "strip" in this town, full of yuppie ***holes. i'd rather drive around the backroads or on the south end of town where nobody else is. it is my religion, closest thing i have to it, i'd say. nothing else has made this last 6 months as amazing. matter of fact i have been doing pretty good until recently due to drama with some girl. i think i need to stay my *** the hell in the garage.

When I'm hammering on my roadster, or on stage with my guitar,
    I'm the COOLEST MOTHER****ER ALIVE.

    No doubt about it. Haha

When I'm not on stage, or in the roadster,
    I'm a disfunctional Loser.

It's the Ying and Yang thing.........

I do the burnout for myself,,,, the rest you are correct about.. makes me feel good when I am behind the wheel, not only do I feel good but I seem to loose the stress of the day. plus people let you into traffic easier, dont flip you off for drivig alittle slower or forgeting to use the turn signal... ya driving a Hot Rod has its advantages.

  17. Nads I look up to you as a role model just reading this post i think i am a little more stuck up and i threw away my peter pump cause i dont need it any more

  18. Nads my man, this post is funny. I think I posted the same thing a year ago! Only I took more ****. Seems many folk try to play off the ego thing. If it wasnt partly about the ego, we would all drive Grand Prix' and Cavaliers!!!!

bobbleed, I'm gonna get the double whammy of rock 'n' roll tonight. I'm gonna drive my ****ty '60 Chevy station wagon to The Pea**** Room (a semi-gay bar with patrons that actually listen to you). I'm gonna unload my ****ty upright b***, my ****ty Kustom amp combo, put on my ****ty fez and ****ty aviator sungl***es and rock the **** out, ****tily. If'n just one person comes up to me afterwards and says that they dug it, that would be reward enough.
It ain't about the pay, it sure as hell ain't about the *****, I'm too old and too married for that. And truthfully it's not even about me, yeah I'm contradicting myself, but it's about keeping some forgotten part of America alive.
If I come away with the feeling that I succeeded on some level, I'll be a happy teenager stuck in a 43 year old body.

I can dig the hoopties with the b*** and the dubs because they're as egotistical as we are, but the fact remains is that we build our ****, or keep some ancient heap on the road long after it should have been melted down into a Hyundai. We don't just bolt **** on.

    That ****'s hard to do.

And that's why I tip my hat/fez to all my brothers and sisters out there. What you do warms my heart and inspires me. What you do makes me get up at 6.00 am with a hangover and gets me out to the carport to work on ****. That heap ain't gonna fix itself.

I'm proud to part of this circle jerk fraternity, and I can't tell you how deep the friendships I have a****st you.

Yeah, it's about me, but it's you that are the fuel that powers this rampaging machine.

Slazzen, please don't look up to me as a role model, I'm a half***ed nitwit with more p***ion than skills.

The time I feel the best is when a kid wants to see inside my car...I let em jump in and pretend they are driving it...The parents get a real kick cuz most of the jerks with old cars are too **** about their precious stuff to let the kids come see it up close....Jump on my seat...pull the shift lever, and jelly encrusted little paws grabbing the steering wheel...and maybe they will build something someday because I let em experience something new....THAT is my ego trip!!!!

I think if you've had your hand in building something like a hot rod..or custom, right off the bat you have a little different feeling and outlook about what you have.
Much of it's pride, and there sure as hell is ego too.

There's no doubt that when i'm driving either my coupe or the truck, there's an ego boost goin' on..

Let's face it, when you pull up to a light, and the couple next to you are checking out your car, and the little kid in the van infront of you is whacking his old man on the back of his head yelling "HEY DAD, LOOK AT THIS THING BEHIND US!!"
It's cool. And not 'cool' as in the 'sceen' cool, but a general good feeling.
Hell, some of them like our stuff, and some don't, but they ALL know were there!
Try and pull that one off in some econobox or SUV..
When i fire up the coupe, and take it out..it's like i'm saying "hey ****er's, here i come!" without saying anything at all.LOL

I LOVE cars, it's a p***ion, religion, whatever you want to call it is fine..
but it's not "just a hobby" for me.
To me, being able to drive something that you actually built, is one hell of an accomplishment!
Setting a goal and reaching it, that means a LOT to me regarding cars..
It's therapy, fun, an adrenalin rush..and self gratifying.

Yeah, there's an ego stroke..and if someone tells you there isn't....there not being honest with themselves.

    Tony.

I think it's an ego thing for sure.
I've always been a wise-*** and get off on the fact that my car pisses of 95% of the people that see it-
the bling-blingers want to know where the bang and 22's are,
the resto-guys want to know why the hell someone would scallop, shave, deck, nose, pinstripe such a cherry car.
It might also have something to do with the severed squirrel tail hanging from the license plate and my 'White Trash for Kerry' bumpersticker...
    I actually sold a '98 chevy cavalier z24 for 4k to buy the '62 for 3k-
guess which car will be worth more 5 minutes from now? [IMG]

I agree with Hatch...it's the best when a little kid gives you a thumbs up, and you can see the look on his face...he's hooked and always will be from now on. Kids are honest and don't have any preconcieved notions about what is cool, they like what they like for no other reason than it makes them say"COOOOOL"
My mom tells me when I was a squirt and there was a parade ,I wouldn't watch anything until the old cars came by. She says I had that "look"

I love the traditionals and Custom's (Especially Mercs) are my dream ride. That being said I'm about as far from traditional as a man can get as evidenced in my rides. I just can't drive what everybody else drives, It's gotta be me, people give me thumbs up all the time some called my "truck" an outhouse on wheels But thought it was cool none the less. Rods is Rods and the folks that drive em are REAL.
