Recently I posted a thread about all those Saturdays spent looking for parts in the junkyards and how they all have about qui letting customers roam the rows of cars looking for parts, I'm sure it has a lot to do with liability and insurance, this thread has nothing to do with that! Another Hamber sent me a conversation asking me do I only use Ford parts on a Ford build or visa versa when it comes to Chevys. The guy is new to hot rods and customs so I explained that from my prospective I use what will work, I have no problem using a Chevrolet alternator on a Ford engine, I have also used a Chevy driveshaft on the Ranch Wagon, if it works I will use it. One piece I used when making the p***enger strap loop on the B pillar for entering the back seat area was pirated from a VW, I needed something to cover the edge of the material. The piece of trim is from a '65 VW running board and I cut 2" off ether side to make a cap, it's amazing how some things look like they were factory pieces. HRP
HRP the sill plates for my A roadster are pieces of screen door threshold that I engine turned, cut to length, and screwed down, to hold the carpets in place. Looks almost like they came there from the factory. A little hard to see in this pic but you get the idea. I'm not above using whatever I can get my hands on that looks good, serves the purpose, without looking hokey or out of place.
"Whatever will work." Indeedily, sweetily. My project... - 1926 Dodge ch***is and doors - 1929 Chrysler cowl - Model T turtle deck - 1931 Dodge grille - '23 Hupmobile steering wheel - 1978 Dodge 440 engine - '68 Baccaruda 4spd transmission "... and whatever the hell else ya wanna throw in there."
I think the serious answer is... The later builds were a little looser. They were trying new things, cuz they had new things to try. Consequently, we can be a little looser if we're emulating a later build. But... If I was building an early-style dry-lakes-type roadster, I would have to be just as strict with myself as anybody as far as using the correct era parts.
Thanks HRP! I think it is a replica of an Auburn dash. I bought it here off the HAMB from someone. I made up the sill plates and shifter trim to all match the dash.
When my father and I built my avatar we were budget conscious throughout ( the lone exception at the time was paint) . Looking back I think we could have done better in some ways but were unable to do so.
I have a VW friend who says every rod should have a VW part. I used a VW electronic headlight dimmer switch on my rod.
53/54 Plymouth radio delete for switch box face plate. Grabbed this at a bone yard years ago....just liked the sort of Jetson's look of it....had no idea what I would ever use it for. Worked out great when I put below dash switches in.
I have a Ford bellhousing, Tremec TKO, driveshaft, 8.8 rear, brakes, and emergency brake cables behind the Hemi in my Chrysler. I used an Empi ground strap from the block to the frame, does that count?
Yeah the 56 is a full mashup of cars, lol. My 33 is mainly Ford and Chevy smashed together. I do have a little notebook I keep notes of neat parts of cars I see for future custom building.
