So it looks likes the Navy's going to be moving me to Rhode Island for a few years and im curious if anybody had the down-low on the hot rod/custom going ons in the tiny state? I know that being in the new england region means long winters to work on projects and that brings me to my second question, anybody ever rented shop space out there, specifically in the Newport area? Any tips on the area in general would be appreciated!

    from Woburn, MA

I met a group of guys at the last Boston Autorama from the CREEPS C.C. RI, and I know there's at least one other active C.C. down there, the Leadfoots. Those guys would be in the know as far as the area goes. Make sure you've got a plan for heating whatever shop you get into!

In the Spring to Fall in Foxboro, MA, there's a huge cruise every other Thursday in the B*** Pro lot put on my the M*** Cruisers Auto Club. I've been to it twice & there were easily 1500-2500 cars either time (everything from Hot Rods to Rock Crawlers).

    EDIT:
CL listings for RI garage space, looks like $500 to $1000ish/month is the norm. You'll be looking closer to Providence to find this kind of stuff from the looks of it.

I was stationed in R.I. in the '60s and the Winters are bitter but there is some Hot Rod activity if you look for it. As far as renting space in Newport you better have a bigger bank account than mine. The place was developed as the Summer playground for the Billionaires in New York and pretty much remains that way today. The place is truly beautiful in the Spring and Summer but even a 90 degree day at the beach turns 50 when the Sun goes down.
