What a great thread. Our family lived in Pearblossum 'till 1951 (I was born in '39 in Palmdale). Some of my earliest memories are of sitting on a straw bales watching dark loud cars go racing by with guys heads barely sticking out. I remember goggles but not helmets, that true?

This thread is awesome. Anyone have more pics? Looking for color ideas for late 40's roadster build. Would like to paint my '32 something other than black.

 

Probably the best source is 'The birth of Hot Rodding, Story of the Dry Lakes Era' Study the photos in particular what's in the background, lots of different colours, some bright, some dark, some metallic, some solid.

 

I should have also said vintage colour charts are a great source of available colours. Look at Cadillac, Packard, Hudson, Buick & Chrysler for metallic colours

Hi Jimmy, I have a question about Schenck's early Streamliner. You seem to have so many photos of the car, I thought I would ask you my question. Most people say he first ran it in 1940 as number 4, and there are many photos of no.4. However, at the last meet of '39, SCTA Racing Program, Oct 29, 1939 show him running a Streamliner no. 14 with a Stock V-8. First of all, never heard of him running anything in it other than his Chevy 4; And he had run his Modified as no. 14 in earlier 1939 meets. Think it's just an error in the program? If not an error, have you ever seen a photo of the Streamliner carrying number 14?

Don Raible 29 roadster

 

I saw this on EBay, don't know if it sold or what it fetched...

 

It sold for $ 6555. I didn't see it when it was active and would have made a stout run at it myself

 

Did the add at least say vintage, famous and with a history? Because otherwise my deepest fear would be...

The So-Cal Streamliner built by Alex Xydias, driven by Dean Batchelor @ Bonneville in 1950. Car is currently owned by Paul Atkins and is displayed in the lobby of Paul Atkins Interiors in Hanceville Alabama.

 

The original was destroyed at Daytona Beach, Bill Daily driving, he was hurt and the car sold for scrap. This replica is very well done, featured in TRJ a few issues ago...

I think the new owner may be a rat rodder. Probably a 318 dodge and sitting on a s10 chassis.

Bloody rat rodders. I look forward to seeing the Don Raible '29 roadster restored. fwiw Don won the 1993 AMBR with Blu Steel '32 roadster.

 

The listing is 161521461404 , or search under completed listings for Model A Roadster. The auction ended on Dec. 21. I actually have some other pictures of the car when it was for sale years ago. I will try to find them and post them. It is for sure a 1940's hot rod all original. Good luck to the new owner. It will be great to see the car back in shape from it's glory days.

 

If I was sad before, that would have made me cry! Except that I'm a big guy and I only cry when I'm alone.

Jimmy - These photos were listed when it was for sale several (maybe ten) years ago. I hope it went to a good home.

 

We can only hope that the new owner is kinder to it than the last few have been and that he knows exactly what he has. I love roadsters with '40 steering with column shifts. How modern was that way back then?

 

I remember stumbling on the photo of the auburn dash a few years back...kinda shocking when a car that was built so well is left to rot for so long. That sheet metal has gotta be paper thin in spots...it's gonna be one of those restos where very little of the original car remains. Regardless, lets hope we see it at Pebble Beach in five years looking as clean as Don originally built it. JohnnyA
