Does anybody know how warm a flathead should run. When should I panic!! I built a custom radiator, electric fan around town it runs about 160 when I put load on it, It will climb to around 200-210. Is that too hot for a flathead?. I have the motor pumped up. I have a 48 Ford with a 59AB, with T5, 9in Ford w/3;50 gears. When I'm doing 70 it is only taching 1700rpm not running warm about 180, but as soon as I start climbing it'll get up to 200. Any ideas?? Thanks Jon
Hi, I don't have an answer for you, but I do have a suggestion. You posted this in the "intro" section, ask the same in the HAMB discussion forum, I'm sure you'll get your share of answers. Good luck on it. Marko.
Not a flathead related answer...just basic rules. If it gets hot at slow speeds there is not enough air going thru the rad. If it gets hotter the faster you go then the water is going thru the rad too fast to be cooled (if the Rad is large enough). No chance that it is running lean??? check a spark plug for color...I understand that flats like it a little rich. From your cruising RPM it sound like the timing would be all in...I have had one heat when the timing was more than a few degrees off (usually retarded). Good luck...I just tamed my demon...489 CI that wanted to run 240 at low speeds.
