Is it just my eyes (or the camera angle) - does the grille shell have "negative caster" or forward rake i.e., is the bottom closer to the cowl than the top? If so, is there room to straighten it up (move bottom forward or shorten the hood)? The angle hurts my eyes! vic

Its just floating there, nothing is holding it in place yet. It will straighten out once its everything is bolted down in final assembly.

The new front tyres look much better - it's the width of the whitewall that does it.
    Please keep them posts coming.
    Thanks.

With the column cut and U joints needed to clear the engine block, Hubcap came up with a nifty way to support the column/steering shaft by mounting it to the X member between the pedals. Check it out:

    And the column is mounted!

Some more weekend progress after the holidays.....

On the VW dash, you can notice in some of the before photos that there is a notch for the steering column to sit in much like any other dash. The only problem with that is we aren't using a VW column. So in order to retain the factory '40 column drop and make it look like it was meant to be there, some metal needed to be added.

Great idea on the VW dash - it looks like it was meant to be there.
The build is coming along great - brilliant save, and thanks for posting all the pics, etc.
    Cheers.

I bought this motor sometime back in 2006 or 2007 and hadn't paid too much attention to the motor mounts that were attached to it. Rather than trying to fix them or add to them, hubcap1 came up with a cool solution that reminds me something of a Cal Custom piece. Check it out:
